88 Advance "rescue boat"
« on: July 05, 2011, 08:17:37 AM »
The 88 Advance I rescued from Florida Runs!! Over the past 3 weeks my Son David has been schooled on Advance restoration. The really good news is that I can use this boat to help others with their questions, now if I can figure out how to transfer pics form my camera to the site would really help.
Major trailer restoration Complete: Took it down to a welded chassis with no hardware, prepped & painted w/ BMW black metalic urethane
New Brakes, ss lines, actuator, new winch, new wheels/tires, new bunk boards & carpet, new running boards & carpet, new LED lights, new wiring. Best of all was the all new American Skier 2012 welded side guides that will absolutely prevent my son from putting the boat on top of the fender. (week 1 & 2)
Week 3  was spent prepping the boat, remove the fuel tank, tighten swim platform brackets, check alignment, was off by 3/4" this became a 6 hour alignment, new blower hoses, fuel hose, fabricated a choke linkage that was missing, replace bilge pump & float switch, replace starter motor, change oils & filters, replace a couple faulty switches, replace horn, machine compound hull & deck (r & r the windshield for this) Clean the upholstery, test run at the shop.
July 4th Test run; Trailer worked great, boat has a couple leaks to track down, & will need a carb kit. overall it ran really good, only took one page of notes to work on, David skiing after we cleared the gators from the river, ( one was really pesky & didn't want to move) (BTW if anyone doubts the authenticity of the goofy TV show "The Swamp People" just come down & ski with us, even with holiday traffic we saw 4 gator lines along the Tickfaw river were taught)

I wanna see pictures of the side rails...would like to do something similar.  ...And I'm not admitting to putting mine on the fender...not to this crowd, anyway.

Sounds like you may have a few customers for the side rails...   :)   Hopefully, they'll meet two of my basic requirements...

#1:  They can bolt on - no welding required.
#2:  Theyre inexpensive - I know the word is relative to the amount of $$ in your wallet  :(  mine is practically empty :(

Since I was completely stripping the trailer & repainting I welded the brackets on using .25"x 1.5" x 1.5" angle. The Advance trailer used "slant-back" fenders which are hard to find, I have checked everywhere I could to no avail. Both my former suppliers stamp their own fenders & said they haven't had a call for these for years. Most of the std. steel fenders are now stamped in china. That said the Advance really should be on a 2-3" wider axle, but since we were shipping many of these to Europe & S. Africa they needed to fit inside a 20' container. I used the common 9" round fender but spaced it out about an inch past the tire, where the OEM set-up had the sidewall of the tire exposed outside the fender. My next one I think I will section the axle & try that approach. What I did worked great but required alot of fitting & when done I have a total of 1/4" clearance between the guide & hull. If there is a need out there I have another '88 Advance trailer in my junkyard that I could design a bolt on set specifically for those trailers. One of the design criteria is that they must be able to support the weight of the boat without allowing the boat to touch the fenders if someone really loads too deep.  I took pics of the trailer work including the new guides but my hacker will have to figure out how to post them.

Ron, I have someone here in town that carriers the slant backs in plain steel and stainless.

If you need 2 let me know. I've got 2 sitting here waiting to be fitted and powdercoated for my trailer.

Ron, looking at the picture you put on your web site, it appears that basically you have (in a way) extended the side bunk that is made onto the fender by adding a few pieces of angle and a piece of carpeted wood. It appears the wood is on the same angle as the fender (which makes perfect sence) and follows that line in an effort to make that line higher.....

Am I pretty much in the ballpark here? Basically you are making it in every way impossible to drive up on the fender while making it a little more easy to center the boat on the trailer....... Unless someone is loading crazy deep like I do  ;D cause I float on and Im anal about it cause my boat is painted and not getloat.

The added side guide is fabricated from PT 2x6 rounded to match the fender radius, does not touch the fender or stock fender carpeted inner panel, but they are close (about a half inch clearance) The angle is the same as the inner fender board but it is a half inch "in" from the fender board to assure that the boat can't even touch the inner fender board.

So where can I get a pair...?   Wait, dont answer that...   ;D

Where can I get a pair of FENDER GUARDS...???  That sounds MUCH better  ;)   Preferably bolt in or clamp on to existing trailer frame  :)

Remind me again in Nov. when it less than 100 deg., I have another 1988 Advance trailer here, thought about fabricating a set that bolt onto the main frame rails & offering them up as bolt on kits.
