Carpet and Glue???
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:51:10 PM »
What is the correct carpet and glue to use in my 80 American Skier?

I know the original carpet color was brown with the tangerine/cream combo but.....uhhh....not so sure want to go back to that ....although am trying to be as original as possible I may waffle on that issue because the brown in not very attractive now or 30 yrs ago..  Was considering gray if not brown but will have to see how it matches the cream color.

BUT what is right glue to use and what kind of carpet is appropriate and where is best place to get it?

On my boat the carpet is only glued to two surfaces--the resined over wooden floors, and also the inside of the hull --inner walls which is just the back side of the woven roving of the hull.

I had considered gluing it to the hull sides inside and to the floor from the pylon forward and then having it be removeable with snaps from the pylon back  or else just glue it all.

Any ways--the question has been asked.....thanks DOUG

WEll, might be answering my own  question but appears that a waterbased marine carpet glue is the best choice laid out with a 1/8" troweling tool and then a carpet of choice either 16/20/24/28 oz carpet which is probably one of those "get what you pay for" things...I ordered some sample of "sandstone" taupe" and another one I forgot name of that are all sort of beige/tan/grayish colors

Can't find brown and really dont like it anyways!  It will be one of my only visible deviations from stock restoration--the other changes I have made are hopefully all improvements and not visible at initial exam--want to keep a very clean OEM look going.

There are "taupe" colors out there that may match the cream base color & I would go that route myself. As for the glue I have used the water based glues & they work but require too much cure time for my liking. Outdoor type rubber contact cement is what we used, we pre-fit the carpet, rolled back a couple feet sprayed the floor & backside of the carpet, waited 2 min & pressed her down. The same can be done with a brush.

Ron's way is the way I did mine,  roller and brushes though.
