Sundeck
« on: March 07, 2011, 10:22:30 AM »
Has anyone built a sundeck in their boat? I purchased a '87 Advance from my cousin for $1500 in great shape with a bad motor. Replaced the motor with a 351w thats bored .030, stroked, heads have work, new manifold and carb, etc. Now I'm turning my attention to the rest of the boat. I have a nautique fct modeled tower in the works for it and I was wondering if anyone had built a sundeck. I have seen a few in some cc 2001s and an older supra.

I know on the later skiers the rear seat would flip up into a sundeck.  It was a pretty sweet gig.  Might be worth asking Ron T or Dan T about??  There is a good chance that one of them came up with this idea.

A sundeck will probably work if your not planning on taking too many passengers...  not a lot of spare room in an 87 Advance.  If you figure out how to do it, please post LOTS of pics!!   Good Luck!!    8)

Id forgotten about this thread! Ended up building the tower myself, and I must say it came out pretty well, but I'm still working on the seating/storage issues. I want to run 2 sacs next 2 the motor (they are 800lbs a piece!)  so I was thinking of building something to cover those plus have a rear facing seat following the engine cover lines that the bottom would fold up and it would be some storage....... Maybe?

Your running out of room fast...  Ron fabricated the original sun deck for these boats.   I think it was on one of the other models though.   Basically, the back seat top & bottom cushions were hinged (I think) and came up together to rest on some midlevel supports which brougth the top of the seat cushions level with the top of the gunnel.  Pretty snazy for the time   ;D

Like before... ya gotta talk to Ron T.

Hello All,

This is my first post on the site although I have been lurking for a year or two. I purchased a 1991 Advance last summer and have been in the process of correcting a few years of neglect and some "interesting" repairs. The craft did not have a rear seat when I purchased and front passenger seat base has been replaced with a carpet covered wooden structure. Im now to the point of restoring the interior and would like to build/buy a rear seat assembly and the "L" Shaped passenger seat.

I had seen photos online of the convertable seat/sundeck and really like the idea. Actually, Its "Moma" that would enjoy laying out while the kiddos swim and such. Were you able to fabricate or source material to adapt the concept to the Advance? Are there any pics available of how the system worked? I would also be intrested in any rebuildable seats that were not the convertable deck type.

I'd send a PM to Ron for ideas...  He's done this to AM Skiers professionally and can provide better input than anyone on here or elsewhere for that matter.   Give him a shout  :)

Your rear seat may not be "missing"...  most comp ski boats didnt come with a rear seat    :-X   Some of us are lucky enough to have one with the removable center seat    8)   Best of both worlds    ;D

I really like the functionality of that sun deck, you could have a sac under there and fill as much as possible with people sitting there, or put it up as a sun deck and then fill the bag to capacity.

Hey folks,
I've received a couple PM inquiries about the convertible rear seat/sundeck in our Volanté so thought I would post what I hope is accurate description of how the sundeck is attached to the boat and how it converts.  I will post some more detailed pics when I get her unwrapped for spring commissioning.  I will of course defer to Ron and Dan Tanis as the absolute authority in case I've missed or misrepresented anything.

With the seat in the down (sitting) position, the seat back is only attached at the upper corners at the aftmost top side gunwhales.  Imagine a small diameter metal rod that spans inside the top of the bench seat (I'm speculating that there is a full length rod - it could be just a connection at each seat back top - it's all under the upholstery so I'm not able to see it fully).

This "rod" is attached to the gunwhales in a small metal bracket on either side of the boat - think of a simple closet bar with 2 U shaped cups on either side attached to the wall - that's essentially the design.  There is a small diameter clevis pin through the top of the U cup to secure the bar in the cup.  The ends of that rod have a counter-sunk screw head so it allows a small adjustment to the overall length of the rod.  It's that screw head that sits in the U cup.

The seat base does not sit fully on the floor in the down position, it actually rests on 2 wedge shaped pieces that are up against the gunwhales on the floor of the boat - it leaves 3-4 inches of vertical space under the seat where I can put a fully deflated skitube or two.

Notice in the Flickr pics mentioned earlier in this thread that the hand-hold bars on either gunwhale (near the speakers) have a unique shape to them - this is by design as the horizontal portion of that bar becomes the support for the seat base bottom when it is hinged into the up (sundeck) position.

When in the Up position, you rest the seat base on the top of those brackets and then there is a single hinged pole that manually comes down from the back of the seat-back and drops into a small recessed cup in the aft floor panel that is the rudder access panel.  Since that pole is attached to the seat back (not the seat base) it prevents the seat base from hinging downward and maintains the rigid sundeck.

Here is a pic I found online that is somewhat similar to the type of hinge that connects the seat base to the seat back - this isn't exactly the right one as the AmSki one allows the two surfaces to flatten back completely for sundeck mode.

Hope that helps but drop me a line in this thread so everyone benefits from Q&A's.

I would love to see a photo of the bottom of the sundeck when it is in the up position.

Also, does anyone have any idea where the handles could be found.  I plan on doing this next year when I replace my interior.

I'm in the process of creating a generic interior pattern from my '88 & will see if a convertible rear seat is even practical, I will most likely be using the 2000 interior rear seat which is not convertible. (too small & narrow back there)
