Marine parts

Just a quick reminder/discussion about using marine parts and not automotive parts when making repairs.  Yes, there are some items that get "marine" included in the name for the sake of marketing, however there are many parts that are specially designed for marine applications.  Some examples are fuel pumps, carbs, fuel lines, starters, alternators, distributors, and flame arrestors to name a few.  These are probably the most important ones, but there are more items that are equally important.  Please do not try to save money by going to the auto parts store, as the money saved may cost more pain than the overtime worked to buy the correct "marine" part.  It seems that everyone on here is very knowledgable about these things, just a reminder so everyone doing the diy before this season starts is safe and gets to enjoy the season!

Insurance claims is the reason to use MARINE parts particularly anything that can spark (ignition, electrical) or ignite (fuel delivery system) $40 starter will work just fine in your 351 for a year or 2 .......... some even have lifetime replacement warranties........ and I have customers that go this route........... not me, not in my boat, or one I work on.  $100 savings is not worth the risk of losing your boat let alone the potential injuries.................

Exactly my point.  I guess being a mechanic, we happen to see way more of the mis-use of automotive parts than people realize.  I just hope everyone understands the importance of using the proper parts for the application.  It really may be a life or death decision.
