stumped on gauges
« on: October 14, 2010, 06:27:33 AM »
I installed all of my gauges and wired everything brand new with all brand new wires and connections.

Here are the troubles Im having,

1. the temp gauge is reading off the chart all the time (high end). The first night I backed it into the water and cranked it, the temp seemed to work fine, now the gauge wont sweep or anything, it just reads high.

2. Oil pressure ??? when the key is on (not running) the pressure is off the chart (high) and when the motor is running the pressure drops to 0

3. I put 10 gallons of fuel in the tank and my fuel gauge is reading nothing.

Again, this is all brand new wire and I know there are no cuts or flaws as far as that goes. Brand new sending units (for all three gauges). And the wiring is simple as all get out, one wire on the switch side, one wire to the sending unit, and one wire for the back light. Im not so smart, but I think even I have got the wires figured out. At least all of the back lights work.

The tach and the volts appear to be working properly, and I wired them just the same as the others. All 3 of the sending units cant be bad can they?

Any suggestions guys?

Just a bit of info for everyone. I spoke with Teleflex, it appears that you cannot buy sending units from auto zone or napa. The ohm's are not the same range as marine gauges require. Stupid me, now I have to try and find the right ones, and lick my wounds on the money I have lost on the brand new ones I just bought, installed, AND THREW AWAY THE BOXES FOR!

That COULD be it, but I'd double-check grounds, etc, before I bought more sending units...  Just doesnt sound right...  Good luck buddy!

That was it. Teleflex told me how to check the gauges for proper function and they peg out both ways the way they are supposed to. New fuel tank unit installed and works, other 2 not in stock but will be here today.

Thats not to say you CANT get them from napa, but you must know the ohm's range and they have to be able to match it. Most marine applications are 240 to 33 or 33 to 240 ohm's

You're officially invited Joel. Sick part is I would rather drive than ski, does that make me weird? I never really enjoyed that as much as the kneeboard. I just really like fast boats!

Yes that makes you weird... along with everyone else on this board   ;D  I like to drive, kneeboard & ski very much...  tried to do a 360 degree turn and couldnt get past 180 on the kneeboard...  too old to pull my fat @$$ all the way around and my shoulder wouldnt hack it   :-[

I like the looks my boat gets from the "Nautique Geek" guys...  and the comments after I tell them mine cost $7K...  NOT $67K... I figure I ski well enough, but not competitively so why bother with more electronic gadgets, towers, etc - just get me a good driver  :)
