mirical engine or just a boat anchor?
« on: September 01, 2015, 02:49:45 PM »
A good customer brought me this 1979 ski boat that had not run in years & asked if I cold get it running. Trans has the heaviest layer of rust I had ever seen, aluminum bellhousing is about to corrode through, valve covers are solid rust.
1) checked oil, not too bad
2) installed a good battery, nothing smoked when connected
3) turned the key to start & the starter began turning & would not turn off until i pulled the battery cable off
4) disconnected the starter relay & simply held the starter cable to the battery cable to crank-worked-
5) Check for spark from the coil wire, very weak, checked the wiring at the ballast resister, was wrong, jumped the posts, hot spark now
6) squirted some gas into the carb from my ketchup bottle
7) cranked & she ignited & ran for 5 sec.
8) installed the bucket & hose for water
9) cranked while squirting gas & she took off & ran!!!
Recommendation to customer, she starts but I would leave it on the trailer until we do a little maintenance

It appears that there was a small exhaust manifold leak between the riser and manifold that sprayed water over the engine, a fine spray of salt water will do this in a short amount of time.
