1992 American Skier Advance Sport
« on: September 09, 2014, 05:50:26 AM »
I was hoping that I could get some insight on the American Skier boat on this forum.  I have been looking at purchasing a 1992 American Skier Advance  Sport with 292 hours.  Since I have never heard of this brand I am trying to gather information on the brands overall quality. It appears the power package is made up of a 351 inboard with direct  drive train. The hull appears to be fiberglass but not sure if there are any wood components.  Also, just looking for feed back on the overall characteristics and durability of this model boat. The boat is 22 Years old and just do not want to buy something that will be a continuous project and money pit. Also it appears that the previous owner add a ski tower in the past years. Does this pose any problems/risk. Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

I have an 86 Advance. These boats are hand laid fiberglass NOT chop gun glass like all the other companies. A much sturdier boat in my opinion. My Advance and the sport are slightly different, I wont act like I know all the changes but they are very similar. Mine has wood stringers and transom.

I believe 1992 was a wood free boat but someone will correct me if I am wrong here.

There are several people here who put towers on their boats, I don't think it poses a problem as long as the install was correct.

American Skier was called the Cadillac of ski boats for a reason. In my opinion they are unmatched by any other company out there.

I hope this helps some, Im sure others will chime in. As far as the engine and drive I would suspect a good lookover from a mechanic will get you much better info than guesses on the internet. As long as mechanically sound I have never heard of any issues with the 351 or velvet drives.

ROFLMAO....Maybe you better not be buying any boat then.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't know of any boat that will leave you with extra money in your pocket. Like Mike, my Skier is an 86 and I've replaced the floors, carpet, rebuilt the engine and wetsanded/buffed/polished/waxed the hull after completely disassembliing everything. I am constantly finding more things I can do with it on a weekly basis. It runs way better than any new boat you could go buy for a six figure price tag and I wouldn't want it any other way. The sentimental value from family and friendships developed over the years purely because of that boat are literally priceless. You or anybody else you could possibly name on this planet don't have enough money to buy it. Period.

You've never heard of these boats because they only built about 400 of them a year compared to a couple thousand per year of the other brands. The reason for that is the absolute demand placed on quality and craftsmanship from the original founder.  These boats don't take a back seat to any other competition ski boat ever made in terms of quality or performance. I would be happy to bore with the details but if you spend a few days reading these forums, you'll find that out pretty quickly.

My ski partner of the last 8 years has been a loyal Correct Craft owner six times over in his life (the oldest was a '78 and the newest was an '01 I believe). All of his former ski club friends and family have owned literally several dozen CC's over the years.
After driving and skiing my Skier for the last eight years, he just purchased a "new" 86 Barefoot Skier himself and absolutely loves it. More importantly, his wife loves it. I'd say that's a pretty good testament to what you can expect from one of these boats.

Just be aware that these are hi-performance ski machines and the drivetrains are under a constant load compared to your standard auto. Cables need replacing, wires can get corroded or frayed, senders and/or gauges go bad. Vibration and the marine environment can completely ruin a boat in very short order unless you keep up with routine maintenance but that goes for any boat, not just these.
These boats will run reliably for several thousand hours if you do your part to keep them up but that doesn't mean all you have to do is change the oil and put gas in it. Having a composite boat doesn't mean it's trouble free either, which a 92 would be.

I hate towers but that doesn't mean they don't have their place. As long as it was installed properly, it'll be fine.

Hope this helps make your decision easier for you.

Not a problem at Dan. I plan on doing a whole new thread after we get a chance for a side-by-side photo op of both boats. We haven't used my boat since he got it back here.
It's been fun.

Solid advice above, except in the day we liked to compare ourselves as the Mercedes of Ski Boats, AWSA once said that the "American Skier is the boat that  all others should be judged against"

I actually have an article from Hot Boat magazine (or one very popular boating mag if it wasn't Hot Boat) and they were test driving a Volante Barefoot boat I think it was dated in the late 70's. It sucks getting old and not being able to remember anything, but I digress.
Anyway, the article specifically called A/S the Cadillac of the ski boat industry. I got it along with all my paperwork from the PO when I bought my boat. It was a pretty cool read.

All I remember about that test was that I was single at the time, and Hot Boat mag was published by Larry Flint and they supplied the models from their other publications and were very hospitable to the boat builders ;)
