Happy to find this site!!
« on: August 23, 2013, 10:04:08 AM »
I'm a new member and happy to find this site.  I am a newbie to the American Skier Family and have a million questions.  I read through most of the posts and was amazed at how helpful everyone seems to be.  I recently acquired a 1985 American Skier that has been in extended family (boat belonged to new sister-in-law and her first husband) since new.  She got the boat in the divorce and didn't do much with it.  She and my brother were going to get rid of it, since they bought a new boat.  I saw some potential in it and bought it, although it is/was in pretty rough shape.  I rebuilt the engine, although I need to find some exhaust bellows and can't seem to find any locally.  I also need to replace the swim platform and would love to find an original/replica teak one.  The boat is solid but cosmetically speaking not so much so I am in the process of having it restored to her natural beauty.  The original owner wasn't much help in answering my questions.

Can anyone tell if there is a way to find out what model this boat is?  Maybe from the ID number (AKK11482A585)?  I have the title but the model is not listed.  Was there only one model in 1985?  Title lists the boat at 18 feet but I believe it is a bit longer.  Any other background info would be appreciated.  Maybe some parts houses that will have what I need.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.  Chris

Chris,

I am new to this site also. I have a 1986 American Skier Advance. It is 19' long, 350 CID PleasureCraft Marine Engine. I will try to get some pix up soon.  I am the 4th owner, and it has always been a northern California boat. It's been well cared for and all original.

Can you post some pix of your boat? Maybe we could do some comparing to see if they are the same model or not.

I hope I can be of some help.

Best wishes,

Kurt

Regardless I am very happy to be here I am new to inboards and I love it

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome ;D

We are all excited to see new faces.  Post pics and the answers will come flooding in.  You have all come to the right place and we enjoy answering all the questions.  I'm sure the experts will weigh in shortly, but in the meantime, Tell us as much as you can about your boats and you will get more than your share of responses.

The '94 is just a "TBX".  This replaced the Legend around '93 or so.

In '85 there was technically only one model... The Advanced.  However, there are one or 2 on this site that have the rare, but coveted, '85 Barefoot Skiers.

Again, welcome and enjoy.  Don't forget to think about next year's reunion.  Never too soon.

Holy crap,

Three new members in one post!!!!!

Welcome to all. It's so nice to see the site getting some new legs. Definitely post some pics. I guess the one piece of advice I could give all of you is to grab your favorite adult beverage and start reading the posts here. Don't let the titles fool you, they frequently go off in other directions and you can learn more about your boat than you could have ever thought possible. You find out what you need to do to keep that classic of yours in tip top shape. Even if you're not that mechanically inclined you can find out how to do any maintenance on your own. Not only will you save tons of money, but you'll appreciate it even knowing you did it yourself.
We are also blessed to have one of the former owners of the company and his brother who have forgotten more about how to maintain a ski boat then I'll ever know frequent the site.

Feel free to ask questions. We'll try and help you out any way that we can.

Eddie

Welcome aboard to all three!!!   Eddie is giving you some good advice.  LOTS & LOTS of info on here.  I'm as mechanically inclined as a monkey and I've been able to do all my own maintenance, winterization, etc...  These guys are DA BEST!!!

Welcome to the new members, lots of good info on this site from a huge knowledge base. You won't find bogus incorrect information, but plenty of personal opinions which are good. (the unknown boat is probably a Volante)   Picture of the HIN number & boat will confirm it.
