slolom wake?
« on: August 08, 2013, 08:35:50 AM »
Hi everyone!  I am a slolom skier and like a nice flat, soft wake.  Does anyone know what kind of wake I could expect from a 1988?  I am also wondering about the construction of these boats.  Wood stringers, I suspect?  Any input would be helpful.  I have skied on a few different years of Mastercraft ranging from late '80's to 2011, and also a '93 Nautique.  How does the American Skier compare?

I have an '89 Advance and have been told by many people that have skied behind it that it is one of the nicest wakes to ski behind. I believe the '88 late models had wood stringers and a composite floor. Ron T can answer that question for sure. There is a post somewhere on the site that has addressed this question.

I have no idea what to call you so I'll go with Queeny for now.

I don't recall when AS went composite. I keep thinking the 88 would be really close to when they went composite but Ron and/or Dan I'm sure will be able to confirm.
If they are wood, don't fret. The stringers would probably be fine but the floor would be suspect to need replacing if it hasn't been done. The stringers in these boats are fiberglass wrapped from the factory and I don't know of any that have had to be replaced. Dried out a little bit, yes but not replaced unless it was really abused.

I've skied several years Correct Crafts but nothing newer than a 2000. The wake on my AS is much better than any of them. That's not just my opinion, but the owners of several of those CC's agree.
I can't say about the MC's as the only thing I've done with them is barefoot.
Depending on your skills and abilities you wouldn't be disappointed with the AS wake. Give it run and see for yourself.
Excellent quality boat, but then I'm somewhat biased.

When people run down to the lake to see what is making that noise, you've succeeded.

I am guessing that you are a recreational-type skier? Don't ski long line on a tournament boat -- it's just not right.

At 15-off I don't think you will find a better wake than an American Skier. I can't speak for an '88 in particular, but my '84 has one of the smoothest, flattest wakes I have ever seen at 15-off. I ski with a number of (tournament) skiers, and have never heard a bad word about the wake on an AS.

At 22, there is a bump. I spend most of my time from 28-35 off, and my AS is very nice. 35-off+ will get you into spray on the older boats. I skied my '84 on Tuesday, and a 2012 Nautique Thursday. From 28-35 off I'd take either, and be very happy.

An 88...  what model?  If its an Advance, its the nicest wake you'll find - comparable to late model boats if not better!  My brother has a 2002 CC Nautique and my wake is comparable to his...  easily.  Compared to another MC or CC of the same year and the Advance RULES.   Now compare the PRICE to a MC or CC and you'll see the big difference...  AS is a quality built boat, all hand laid glass & simple design, etc, which makes them very easy to maintain and they cost LESS than either MC or CC  (name recognition).  The early MC's all have different wakes depending upon who laid it up that week, not much quality control, so its hard to compare...  I dont know much about the early CCs, but the wakes of the early 2001 models were supposed to be "great"... and they are, but not compared to an Advance  :)

If your anywhere near Columbus, OH, I'll take ya out on mine and you can judge for yourself.  If you decide to buy one, have someone who knows inboard boats inspect it IN and OUT of the water.  The floors of ANY boat this old is suspect - doesnt matter who made it.
