Possible Side-Hull Graphics Solution!!!
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:06:47 PM »
Fellow AS'ers--I have recently talked to a friend who has the ability to create a graphics file in Adobe Illustrator that would allow those of us that need new "American Skier" side hull graphics to simply take a copy of the file on disk or zip drive or by e-mail to a vinyl sign company and have it printed perfectly to scale as a repro-replica on white with correct outline in black.  (OR for custom color the color could  be easily changed by the vinyl company also.)  I already have a high res digital  photo file of it that I showed her she said is more than adequate to work from with correct measurments inc. I took lots of close-up hi-res photos with a ruler laid over graphics for spacing/size/placement etc anticipating I could eventyally schieve this.

Nevertheless--she is going to get back to me on it in a day or two.  What I am trying to gauge is interest in this project to be available to forum members at large.  Possibly do a sort of "group buy" type of setup to pay her a nominal fee for her time and expertise (which I will find out in a couple days whether this is a pittance or astronomical--she is a nice lady and interested in project so prolly very reasonable) then give the rights to the image/file to the forum so anytime someone needed an original exact repro of the factory sticker/decal etey could simply download it and give to vinyl sign place and it could be cut in white with the 1/4"-5/16" outline actually printed on the white already complete and in correct scale.

Please be aware this will not be a profit making scheme for me or her--just re-imbursment for her time and ability if she comes back with a reasonable price to me_--I believe she will too.

Please leave a message here on this thread if interested and maybe see how far it goes--and actually if it is REALLY inexpensive I will prolly just pay her to do it myself anyways because I think the outcome product will be batter than my hand trace/exacto knife Idea.....!!

ATTN: RON T---let me know if this is any kind of copyright or trademark issue--just wanting to possibly solve this as an obstacle for redoing and restoring graphics for us as a group and for future AS lovers....thanks DOUG ROBERTS

Id normally jump right in on something like this...... but Im a "Barefoot Skier" guy. If it can be scaled down, I might make a couple to put on the top of the windshield or on the back of my jeep...... but thats about all I would do with "American Skier"

Cool--anybody else?  I'm guessing she will only charge my 150-200$ to do the graphic work and I will prototype it on my boat....if it works could be lifechanging for those seeking side-hull replacement graphics as well as the fact once it is a digital image it can be resized for transom stickers etc.. Also looking into having a reproduction of the AS shiled/bikini girl w/a charicature of my wife on the skis rather than the pony tail blond--just for fun since the boat is for her.....D

RON--again is there any copyright/trademark issue on the "American Skier" graphic at this point?

UPDATE:  to the person that sent me a copy of their build sheet with the beautifully clear American Skier logo at the top--a BIG thanks!!!--am still trying to move forward with having a graphic created from it to use as a vinyl template for our AS side hull graphics in a black "cloud" lettering with a slightly smaller (approx. 1/4" reveal) white graphic to be laid over it to create the illusion of white lettering with black edging.  Not the best way but at this point having a white graphic with black edging printed on it will prob fade quickly while the exterior grade vinyl lettering should last at least 5 years if applied correctly.

If I can get it done in a graphic format it could be done as a graphic file that anyone could take to a sign shop with dimensions and be cut out in any size desired and any color--as an outline or a solid.  Still looking to get graphic designer to do so but have had technical difficulties.  PLUS it sis prob going to cost $300-400 of graphics guy time to get it right and I cannot pop that on my own--still looking for anyone that might like to go in on it with me that needs side hull graphics to match the early "Bubble Script"  style of 1977-198(6?) maybe?  RonT help me out for sure so I can move forward with it--going to talk to another graphics guy about it tonight try to get a better estimate.

Not sure how I am supposed to solicit that here--some kind of "group buy" maybe?  moderators let me know and I will get it going on--Thanks DOUG

I posted this in the parts wanted listing a while back, my neighbor will make a crayon rub of a decal and then scan the decal to his computer to make these decals, as a two piece (black background, white letters).  He said it would cost $200.00 per set, ($100.00 per side) plus shipping.  I think if enough people were interested, he may lower that price knowing his time will be for more than one set of decals.  The reason for the crayon rub is to get the same size to cover any fading of the gel over the years, although I would guess the supplier (and size) varied throughout the years.  If you want to go that route, let me know and I will get his contact info out.  As a side note, he is a very good artist so if any one wanted custom colors, lettering ("Barefoot Skier" in close to original style script), or any other custom vinyl decal work, he is very fair priced and can do alot of the design work with a decent digital picture emailed to him.

That was me brother, and you are very welcome. Sorry it wasnt sooner....... work, family, delays....... you know.

I would love to get them in a few diff sizes! Some for the jeep, One for across the top of the boat windshield!

If that will help toward the tooling cost, let me know. I will get a specific number and size to you so you can get a price on it.

Mike
