Alternator 1989 Indmar 351
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:00:18 PM »
What's the best replacement for a stock alternator?  The alternator is on a 1989 American Skier Advance with a 351 Indmar.  The Indmar part number is a 75-5011 which cross references to a Prestolite 110-488.  Ron T has stated in earlier post that the stock alternator is a 35 amp Motorola, the Prestolite is a 55 amp.  It looks like there are a bunch of Chinese built Delco copy marine alternators that should work.  I would rather spend a little bit more to get the most reliable option available rather than deal with a failing alternator in the future.

Here are the issues:
The older boats have 35 amp alts, newer boats have 55 amp, newest models (EFI) may have 60  but the stock wiring harness on the engine is only wired to carry 50 amps, usually a #10 wire. A replacement alt. that has outputs greater than what the wiring can support can overload the wiring & have a meltdown and or fire.
Any replacement alt. needs to be USCG compliant.
As far as I'm concerned if it is USCG compliant, does not exceed the wiring capacity, and bolts up with correct pulley alignment I don't care where it comes from or which mfg. made it. In my shop I stay as close to OEM as possible.
