Fuel tank help
« on: July 25, 2010, 05:38:20 PM »
Alright, the short version, I sat the tank in the back of the boat after I put the floor and carpet in. (picture inclosed) The driver side of the boat the tank sits about a half an inch higher than the other side but the holes line up, and no it is not an illusion cause I measured from the top of the tank to the top of the hull on both sides and its off about a half. The kicker is, the mounting holes line up to the original holes in the stringers.

Am i doing something wrong here? Is it supposed to be that way? Any help would be appreciated, before I nail this thing down.

Thanks, Mike

And one Picture of the new carpet...... its dirty, but you get the idea.

Can't tell from the picture but I wonder if it's because the pick up tube is on the right side(lower side) of the tank to ensure it get's all the fuel. Other than that I don't know a reason why it would be like that but I'll bet Ron or Dan does.

I thought the same thing, so I pulled the sending unit to look and the tube goes strait down to the bottom of the tank next to the sending unit, which is in the middle of the tank. I dunno.

Is the tank a proper rectangle???  Same height, width, length???  If so, then your boat's dimensions may be off - Is one stringer (or another support) taller than the other???  Is the floor attached to the hull higher on one side than the other???  These boats were hand-made and minor variances like that could happen ( especially if Dan wasnt wearing a respirator ;)

At a little over 7 lbs per gallon with a 20 gallon tank (approx 150 lbs full) that spans the boat (pt to stbd) 1/2" off probably doesnt make a big difference either full or empty.  The liquid will level out automatically via gravity with slightly more fuel on one side than the other (maybe the weight of a small child).  Considering the gear we put in these boats, typically on the stbd side behind the driver, passenger's weights, etc, it shouldnt have much bearing on how the boat behaves, handles, etc..  Knowing Dan, they probably did it on purpose to help counteract the weight of the driver or the gear  :)

Having it securely fastened to the boat, properly grounded, etc, would be my main concern.  Still, Ron or Dan would know best since they most likely built it...  Give 'em grief about the gas tank being off-kilter just for kicks...  LOL  ;)

I hope your right. I'm sure you are, cause the holes line up and I know the tank didn't distort.  I'm just being anal I guess but I want to do all this stuff once and once only, right the first time.

Thanks for the input guys

Minor irregularities in floor height side to side are not uncommon, there should have been rubber strips under the tank as well but the pictures are a bit fuzzy to see if they are there.

And there lies your answer. Put some sort of "riser pad" in there to level it out.
