NEW Skier "Bimini" Top prototype ???
« on: November 27, 2011, 03:44:30 PM »
Ron,

I hope the Tanis Clan had a Happy Tukey Day!   I checked out the Skier Top prototype on your Webpage...  I like it and seems to match the boat in style & design.  I have a few ??

Would you please post some close-up pics on here?
How much does it weigh?
After install, can one person lift & secure it in place?
How sturdy are the support rods / brackets (does it vibrate at speed or twist with a strong side wind)?
Is it a single piece of FRP or two sections that fold-up when stowed?
Does it fold down aft?  Over the motor box?
Are there any issues / rub spots with the upholstery when stowed?
Can we run speaker / power wires up inside the support poles?
If you decide to make them, when will it be available?
And the all important...  HOW MUCH $$???

Looks good!!!

Joel, I think all of your questions were addressed during the design stage as requirements prior to building, plus several more. Close ups of various components within the top are not available at this time as numerous revisions have been made & will continue to be made before I make this available to the public.
Weight:  Around 60 lbs. but is coming down, first one is overbuilt, I really think I could stand on top of it.
Lifting:  One person can lower/lift from inside the boat
Supports:  Typical bimini uses 7/8" aluminium tubing, deluxe biminis use 7/8" stainless with one attach point on the deck. I have (4) attach points with (2) additional supports from heavy wall 1"   stainless with quick release fittings.
Construction: Single molded FRP sandwich with foam core
Lay-Down: Lays down over the motor box with short legs contacting the deck providing 1" clearance from all upholstery, My stock canvass cover fits when laid down barely reaching the underside of the rubrail near the top.
Wiring is designed to run up the tubes.
During the testing phase of the current prototype there was less side to side "racking" than a fabric bimini when crossing wakes, has sustained 70mph when "up" trailering.
Cost can be determined after all the revisions have been made & another one is built tracking costs...you really don't want to know how much this one has cost to date.
This project is under cover probably for most of the winter while "paying" customers projects occupy my shop....RonT

Thanks Ron...  Very Cool.  You are Da Man!!  I assumed you'd done your homework and am not surprised you've "overbuilt" it just a tad.  All your boats are overbuilt to a degree which is why they've lasted the test of time and mother nature - not many manufacturers can claim that honor  :)

I like the idea of a light but sturdy FRP "bimini" as compared to the canvas models.  Cost is always a concern, but I have no doubt in your ability to make a high quality product that looks good, is functional & lasts...   Hopefully you'll have a working model, or a few, done in time for the 2nd Annual Reunion.  I may have to pay you in monthly installments starting NOW - do you have layaway??  White with a blue centerline stripe & yellow pin stripes - just in case you were wondering...    LOL!!!

Of course Renee may KILL me, but we just wont tell her...  YET!  ;)   Cant wait to see the finished product!!  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

Plan on resuming R & D on the "Skier Top" in the spring, goal is to bring a completed one to the reunion, still testing the prototype.

Very cool!!  This means if you go to the Reunion you'll get some "facetime" up close & personal with the new bimini   ;D

Looking forward to it!!!
