89 Advance engine clearance
« on: October 24, 2011, 09:16:45 PM »
A guy in the neighborhood got an 89 Advance late this summer.  I was surprised at the extreme angle of the engine and how little clearance there was at the back of the engine.  It's probably 1/2 inch at the bell housing.  Is this normal?

The Drivetrain angle is within a degree of the TBX Models, one difference is the transmissions used, the older boats had Borg Warners the newer TBXs have ZF gears each 1:1 but with slightly different case designs & clearances. TBX's actually had more concerns with this because I moved the engine back 2" from the original WESMAR design to correct a CG issue & shortened the driveshaft & increased drive angle. I doubt that a 80's vintage engine/trans would drop into your TBX without resting on the bottom. 1985-92? Advances are still tight, Fords vs Chevys are slightly different with their oil pan configurations. Bottom line is you need to be able to slide your finger between the bilge or fin bolts and the engine/trans, depending on how large or small your fingers are that equates to .5"-.75" I addressed this in earlier posts about non-maintained boats with oil drain fittings resting on the bottom of the bilge. PROPER shaft alignment will assure a minimum .5" clearance & your good to go.
