I found another American Skier
« on: October 21, 2011, 10:56:49 PM »
Ron, the family member I bought that Skier 18 from told me about another one in the area that I can buy. He wasn't sure what year it was, but was newer that that '80 model. He mentioned it's a bit larger, and has a 'molded' platform. He also indicated this might have been a 'special build' boat, as it has a 454/4-bolt in it.

Would this boat have come from Opa Locka? Would it be an Advance?

I'll try to get some pictures.

Thanks,

Mark

Could be an early Volante which had the "euro-style" platform & there were a number of odd engine packages made particularly for the Barefooters. I remember going down to the Opa Locka shop around 82-83 & saw a twin turbocharged 351 Ford getting ready to go into a boat.

Thanks for the info Ron. This boat was spec'd by the current owner, and has not changed hands since delivery. I'll likely go look at it in the next month or so and I'll take some pictures at that time and get more specific information.

Thanks again,

Mark

In the 70's I helped my best friend engineer & fabricate a turbo setup for a 318 Roadrunner, way before kits were available. When I saw the twin turbo motor in the crate at the Opa Locka shop most of the employees just thought it was an odd motor & we all wondered how we would chop the motor box to accommodate to the turbos. It was a sweet set-up with matching water cooled housings that bolted directly to the water cooled exhaust at the back of the engine & the draw through carb. was directly above the trans. All I remember after that was I think it was destined for South America. There were some scary stuff in that shop...like an Arneson surface drive...Diesels...
