2003 Elan A/S Pro purchase
« on: July 02, 2010, 06:28:15 PM »
Hello all...

I have been poking around the site for a couple of days as I consider purchasing a 2003 Elan A/S Pro. Can you offer any insight into this boat. That is, what are some of the known issues I should look for? Since I am new to the ski boat world, I'm sure I've got some learning to do.

Thanks for the help!
Jeff

HAVE IT INSPECTED BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS AMERICAN SKIERS, YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WORST EXAMPLE FROM A PRODUCTION YEAR STANDPOINT.

And that was in all CAPS!!!!   I think Ron is trying to tell us something!!!  ;)

I dont care what year, make or model it is... you should follow his advice.  I bought a 91 Advance that looked GORGEOUS, turned key & ran, etc...  Only to discover upon closer inspection the words "routine maintenance" was not in the previous owner's vocabulary  :(  These are relatively old boats to begin with and paying for a good inspection (definitely both in and out of the water) by someone knowledgable with at least inboard boats in general and in particular the engines, hoses, belts, struts, shafts, rudders, props, fiberglass, thru-hull fittings, FLOORS, etc, would be well worth the price later down the road  :)  I'm just sayin' be careful...

Thanks for the advice.
I noticed the CAPS as well.

I'll have to track down a shop that can do this. The boat is in Massachusetts and I am in NC. Does anyone have a recommendation for a shop in the Worcester / Charlton, MA area? I realize a knowledgeable tech would be able to spot problems quickly.

Ron, when you say it's the worst example, is this production quality, materials/hardware, or both?

My background is automotive, but worked for a boat dealer for a couple of years while in college rigging new boats, and doing some general customer repair work. This would be the first inboard boat for me (sale pending). I would be okay doing some repairs, but don't want to get buried.

I have a 2002 Elan AS Pro.  I love it.  With that said, Ron used nothing but the highest quality of parts and components.  As time passed beyond the American Skier years, it is possible that components and parts were different from those from Ron's years.  It does come from the same mold, super flat wakes.  If it's a Marine Power engine, I am very impressed with mine.

Is it the one on Ebay?

Theres a beautiful 89 American Skier Advance on Ski-It-Again.com for $6900.  Its exactly like my 91 except for color.  From the pics posted it looks very nice inside & out.

chrisheile, yes, this is the boat currently on eBay. I also found it listed on Craigslist (6/1 & 6/29). The hours listed on Craigslist are different than listed on eBay.

It does have the Marine Power engine. It's going to need some upholstery work and carpet at a minimum. The engine cover looks like it could be restitched, but the lower cushion on the passenger seat is torn. The carpet has a frayed section about the size of a CD behind the drivers seat. The owner said it was from putting skis there without a bag. I imagine it will need some general cleanup as well. What are 9 & 5 yr boys old better suited for anyway!

I'm trying to locate a shop that can inspect it. I made a few calls this afternoon, but considering it's the holiday weekend I didn't have any luck. The owner says he has had regular maintenance performed on the boat including winterization. I imagine I'll have a good 1K in repairs to get it back in shape provided there are no issues with the engine, trans, or hull. Between transporting it back to NC, and the repairs; I figure about $1500 beyond the final price.

The current owner has been pretty good about sending me pictures and additional information about the boat. The pictures on eBay appear to be older since they don't show the damage to the engine cover.

The current owner said he bought the boat in '05 from the original owner in Michigan, and that Ty Opperlander had been using it.

Ron... Did you work with/own A/S while in Florida? My dad was business partners with a gentleman you might know from the boat business (Bob Culton). Their company built flats boats and small fishing rigs in Orlando. This would have been in the early to mid '90s.

Thanks for the info Joel. I saw it and a couple of others listed while I was doing some research today. If this boat doesn't workout I'll definitely look into the '89. I just wouldn't know what to do with a carburetor.

There is also a very nice Advance for sale in Erie PA with next to no hours on it.  Should be in the Erie Times news classifieds (marketplace).

My 12 month contract ended in 2001 with the Elan owners, it was a very mutual departure, I was being forced to reduce cost by materials reduction, labor reduction, to offset massive new overhead expenses by elan. I did not want be associated with anything elan as everything they did was contradictory to what American Skier stood for. There is a fella in Canada with a 2005 model who I had built a boat for in the 80s, he thought he was getting similar quality. In his words "biggest mistake I have ever made, boat is literally falling apart with each hour we try to use it" Here is some very basic model year info from my perspective:
2001 models, good, built in Kentwood
2002 models, early date codes ok, later begins the problems, vendors not getting paid, alternate suppliers being used, experienced laminators replaced with non-exp. still in Kentwood
2003 models, most vendors are now gone or cod, upholstery supplier told to reduce their cost by 25% (so they starting using lower grade materials) Marine Power stops supplying "Blue Thunder" series engines & only supplies a basic, heavier, engine after being pre-paid. Employees are calling me a home wanting to know how to wire the boats, where to reinforce with laminates, nobody left in the shop with any ski boat building experience.
2004-05 models, elan moves most of the tooling & materials 50 miles east to a small building in covington La., abandons the rest (still there today) they try to put together maybe 5-10 boats  over these two years, about 5 of these owners have found me for help, I could write a book on the horror stories from these final owners. From footprints in the gelcoat, to used engines, jet ski parts, and absolutely no support from elan.
I looked at the Ebay 2003 boat online, IF YOU ARE VERY MECHANICAL & BOAT SMART, IT MAY BE A GREAT DEAL FOR UNDER 15K.

All worked out for the best... The seller played a game.
I can only guess he used my commitment on eBay to leverage a local buyer into paying more. He emailed about 45 minutes before the auction closed saying that a local buyer put a deposit on the boat for more than the "Buy-It Now" price that he had previously listed on eBay. Ironically, he let the auction close with my winning bid intact. I guess he didn't read the eBay seller agreement about not listing an item that you're simultaneously selling outside of eBay.

There's always another boat and a more honorable seller.
Sorry for the war story.

I will check into the other A/S boats, and will be cautious of the 2003 and newer Elan's.
Again, thanks for the help and advice.

I think that 89 Advance is still posted on Ski-It-Again.com.  I know most people would rather have a more modern looking vessel, but this looks to be one solid ski boat.  The best part is $6900 is the "asking" price.  Spring is over and the price should come down...  If I had the $$, thats what I'd be looking at!  At any rate, good luck & happy boat shopping!!!
