Trailer hubs, 6 lug
« on: August 16, 2011, 11:25:22 AM »
Did the AS trailers come from the factory with 6 lug rims.   I have 15" rims with 6 lugs, I'm guessing it is 6 x 5.5, and my tire choices leave me very little room for any clearance between the back of the tire and the rear wood portion of the fender.  Actually no room.

No I don't recall ever producing trailers with anything but 5 on 4.5" / 14" wheel/tires pre 1990 & post 1996 Wesmar did not build their own trailers, someone else did & I have seen some 93-94 Texas built trailers with single axle 15" 6 lug wheels. Send me a pic of the trailer & I can tell you if it's an A/S built trailer.

I'll get a pic, it is a 90 Legend.  Trailer has AS lettered on it and the paint scheme matches the boat.   Maybe the axle got messed up years ago.

The 15" rims are part of the problem, is anyone else running 15" rims.   With a 225/75/15 the tire rubs the inner part of the fender and there is about 1/2" of clearance between the top of the fender and tire.

225/75/14 is what I run ( or is it 205 I can't recall), but don't get to excited,  it still doesn't leave much room for play under the fender.

I've actually been thinking about cutting and widening the axle..... but right now its only a thought.

Thats an OEM A/S trailer with an aftermarket replacement axle & dolly jack, if it were in my shop I would section the axle 3" assuming the spindles, bearings, hubs, brakes are good.

Gents,

I have a 92 Legend with the same 6 lug hubs on my trailer and I know for sure that my trailer is all original, never any axle mods or changes.  I would have to look but I am pretty sure that I am running the same size tires also (225/75/15).  So I would say that WestMar did produce or use this setup for sometime or just for the Legend trailers.   I would suspect that the leaf springs are maybe worn as I have plenty of clearance around my tires.  I made a very long trip from Dallas to KY for the reunion and then to Mo to a friends lake house no rubbing.  I will verify the tire size in the am as I have paper work on a tire I replaced this spring.  If you want, you can go the the media page on this forumn and find my folder(wetamb) on the second page of files and there are 2 pics of my boat on the trailer from different angles that show how much space I have around my tires.

American Skier trailers 1977-90 and again from 1996-2001 all used 5 lug 14" wheels & tires and the trailers were built "in-house" at the boat plant. During those years there were two exceptions that I know of, west coast boats seldom used A/S trailers, instead a local California trailer builder fabricated trailers for the west coast dealers, and my old shop Midwest American SKier fabricated our own A/S clone trailer. In both cases 14" wheels were used. The MWAS trailers had longer side steps, and offered optional shock absorbers on the axle and came with custom pinstripes (younger brother Dan fabricated many of these). The reason we didn't buy the A/S trailer was to maximize the number boats that could fit on an 18 wheeler to maximize shipping. However Wesmar years and Elan years (91-95, and 2002+) used a variety of parts, suppliers, and many were built entirely by outside trailer manufacturers. The 6 lug 15" hub/wheel combo has higher capacities but did not fit into the original chassis without changing all the jigs, when we needed added capacity we added another axle.
