Old fuel
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:19:26 AM »
Most of you know my situation.  I started having some trouble early in the year and ended up being diagnosed with a herniated disc and vertebral spurs.  Surgery is August 30.  I stored my boat last year with early additions of stabilizer between 1/4 and 1/8 tank of gas (I add it as I add fuel, not as an afterthought).  Since I have only used the boat twice this year  I still have about 1/8 of a tank of last year's gas.  I did add Seafoam and some of the stuff to counteract the ethanol at the beginning of the season.

My question is what to do now?  I will not be using the boat until next season.  Should I just leave things as they are?  Do I need to siphon some out and add some new Premium fuel with stabilizer and some of the stuff that counteracts the ethanol?   It will get run once more off of the fake a lake when I winterize it.

I do know that either full or close to empty is better than somewhere in between.

Fuel varnish will be your biggest enemy. If its a TBI engine I would do what I could to add 5 gallons of fresh fuel with a heavy dose of StaBil in it & start & run the motor for 5 min. this will circulate the fuel through the system including the injectors. I just worked on an engine that sat for 2 years & it had noticeable pitting in the cylinder walls most likely from condensation, along with many other issues. Any engine today needs to run at least every 6 mo.

Good luck with the back surgery, mine was done in the 70's & worked pretty good allowing me to ski (I did quit my feeble attempts at jumping) until I broke it again in '99, that one ended my skiing.

Thanks.  I left it in the yard last night so I'm sure I can talk a few guys into skiing behind it one more time before August 30.
