What is my boat "worth" ?
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:35:36 AM »
Talking money here...not the countless hours past 3 yrs getting it to where it is now or the value of the feeling I get running down the lake at 2200 rpms with a straight exhaust on a 351.....just curious what it might "sell for"...I gave $2500 for it in 2008. I have spent $500 on it total out of pocket so I guess I got $3000 in it right now if my time is free......

1980 Am Skier, Tangerine and Cream. All available options I think-- Extremely nice inside and out--motor looks a little dirty but runs mint. Upholstery good for a few more years - New floor and foam (you've all seen my thread on that...), new exhaust, hoses and tune-up.  Hull sanded and polished---soon to have all new "OEM" graphics. Really about a 9.5/10 overall.  Only known prob:  left Airglide speedo not functioning due to broken pick-up on rear of boat and need to pull dash down and replace a few light bulbs in gauges so can see something other than tach, temp, and oil pressure at night (although those are the ones I would like to see if had to choose three...! )

BTW--it on an original AS trailer too that is about to be re-painted back to black by my 10 yr old son as his "before going back to school in a couple weeks" project....

ANyone care to opine on what it might go for?  thanks DOUG

Being perfectly honest here. Its priceless. You and I have traveled similar paths, although your boat is older than mine...... the work remains almost identical. If your son worked on it with you its even worth more in my humble opinion.

If your just looking for a denomination to put along side the boat in your head, I personally would go with a 10,000 range, and am possibly way off...... but that's my opinion. Remember,  what you have is a semi rare bird. Which means the right person would have to want it to pay what its worth, to really appreciate what it is.

My 02 cents.  I know mine is priceless and would have to NEED the money before I could sell it in the first place.

If you can remove all the emotions from the boat here is another way to present it. One of the many reasons people buy new or nearly new is to remove the anxiety of repair costs, they want a boat that starts every time & assume that comes with new boats.(big assumption) The boats above are similar projects to my "rescue Advance" When it is put up for sale next summer (available after the reunion) It will have gone through a complete inspection, deck off, engine out restoration, all wear items replaced with new incl. upholstery & trailer. When these boats are finished they look new, run like new & have  more reliable operations because they simpler. (no computers)
New or nearly new non-wakeboard ski boat : $25-40K (you will blend in with the crowd)
Fully restored 15+ year old American Skier: $10-15K (you will stand out in the crowd)

Greetings ya'll,
I have a 1992 American Skier Sport Volante. What is my boat worth on the market? Somewhere probably less that what I spent on it recently. But to me?? It cant be replaced. You see, I bought this boat in 1992. My kids were in junior high. My wife and I were in our late thirties. We spent many summers at the lake with them and our friends making memories. Now we are using it with them and our grand kids. Its like one of the family. Now we are in our sixties and I like it as much as the day we bought it! We put 10 hours on the clock yesterday. I tried to ski and i could not get up. I guess time is catching up with me. I will be looking for a new set of combos for a big guy soon! Thanks for the memories!! Priceless!

I am with you on all that.....not likely to sell it anytime soon---would like to be able to pass it along to the kids in another 30 yrs when I am gone and it is TRULY a classic....plus their is no price for a boat that is built with the kind of quality that lets you teach your 10 yr iold to ski behind and will last long enough that he can teach his 10 yr old to ski behind.....

But I figured once I install carpet and redo upholstery it would be in the 8k range to the right buyer...maybe more?  Was also curious for insurance purposes as far as replacement value too.....

The trailer was taken apart last night to have the frame painted this weekend --going to let the 10 yr old boy help me paint it, and he is excited!!--a dozen disposable brushes and a quart of black paint? $40.....watching him get to "paint a whole trailer by myself" in the yard?....PRICELESS ;D

I will refit and then carpet the wooden fender liners and stand-on platforms after painting is complete....

WIll post pics as I go
