1986 Advance Rudder
« on: July 10, 2011, 07:30:21 PM »
Ok, so I pulled my rudder out this afternoon. Had a leak around the "base" (dont know name of the inside base). Everything came out as planned, while she is out I want to replace the 2 seals and the O-ring.

Mine were BAD BAD BAD

Question is, do the seals face each other? (I mean the seal that is driven in the deapest faces up and the top seal faces the other seal to create a cavity) or do they both go one way or the other?

They were so bad off I couldnt tell which way was which. Going to replace grease fitting while Im down there, of course re-caulk, and tighten back down as needed.

Any other suggestions or comments on this job before I put her back together tomorrow afternoon?

Thanks as always,
Mike Harry

Oh yeah, and on a side note I also installed a rear drain on her as well. I may have already stated that elsewhere, but I just finished putting that all together. Only test fitted up until now.

According to Ron,  my setup is not a stock setup so please don't use this post toward working on your rudder or related components.

Ok, after a lapse of reason yesterday ....... I sanded around the base of my rudder base plate. It appears that it may have been something used for a very short period of time on AMSKIERS.

I reinstalled everything after putting in new seals, snap ring, and o-ring.... ran her yesterday and everything works as planned.

I am happy to report I have 0 (zero) leaks in my bilge now.

HELL YEAH!
