Heater issues
« on: May 04, 2010, 07:26:22 PM »
I took the boat out today and adjusted the carb fuel/air mixture and idle speed - she runs like a champ.

Unfortunately...  lately, there always seems to be an "unfortunately"...  my heater started blowing droplets of warm water...  I crawled under the dash and found the air hose that runs from the heater fan to the vent full of water... warm water... about 140 to 160 degrees I'm guessing...  :(  Not sure if this thing has a heater core or what...

Does anyone have any idea why or how this is happening?  And, what to do about it?

Thanks in advance,

If your boat has the optional heater or has had one installed, yes there is a heater core, blower, ducts. Most common problem is cracked cores from water left in them and allowed to freeze. The good news is that it is much easier to replace than any car or truck I've worked on. Remove the heater, apply some water pressure to an inlet fitting while caping the other with your thumb & look for the leak, some times a local radiator repair shop can repair it for you, other wise replace it. (never overpressurize the core-15-20 psi max) my thumb is calibrated for 18psi.

Thanks Ron... and thanks for the call today.  Could have sworn I had all the water out of that, but apparently NOT.  I may put another heater back in so I kept the hoses & electrical wires where they were.  I took out the heater and put a connection between the two hoses so the water will just circulate.

Which reminds me... would you happen to have a heater laying around in that-there shop of yours???  And, a snorkle for the passenger side??  I mean, since I'm asking I might as well go for the gold  ;)

Anyone else got one laying around???

Thanks,

By Snorkel do you mean the 12" long black plastic round housing with the round vent on top that pulls out & stretches 3" black hose so you can shove it in your wetsuit to warm up?? If this is what you are looking for then yes I have one. Heater cores are ordered as needed, none in stock, we don't need no stinkin heaters in the da south, but we do need oil skimmers.

I thought the snorkel was a heater hose (warm air - not water) extention with a vent end that you could pull out to help warm the passengers in the "L" seat.  Clearly the fan isnt all that strong to begin with so its kind of a novelty item at best...  ;)  I'm not all that sure we need a heater, much less a snorkel, but the heater did come in handy on the early morning runs  :)

How much do they cost... the heater and the snorkel... priced separately?

I used to skim oil in my younger days...  now, I just watch them spread out the containment boom for the TV cameras... cause thats all its good for once the oil has been released...   :(  Good luck down there!!!

Depending on which core you have they run about $100 The pull out vent or snorkel as you called it runs around $50 I have a new one here you can have for $20 + S & H
