Hull Graphics?
« on: April 17, 2010, 09:08:12 PM »
GOt a 1980 American Skier--see pics in my other post.

Afraid I will get the same answer I keep getting--but has ANYONE done a re-make on the side hull graphics?  I removed mine they were very cracked and shrunk--then I sanded/buffed out hull really well.  I took a bunch of real clear close-up pics of graphics inc a bunch with a ruler next to height and width of stickers.

I gave them to a friend at a sign shop to see if he could re-produace them in original white with black outline but i got no love so far.....

Really hoping someone already did this project and has it as a .tif file or in adobe or hi-res .jpg or something so it can just be handed to the vinyl guy and given dimensions and printed out.

Anybody?  I have been told by Ron and a couple other folks the stickers are obsolete and unavailable....thx DOUG

Cant help you with the "American Skier" but I do have pencil trace of "Barefoot Skier" off the side of my boat with the "feet". Have a friend that will be making them for me in the near future.

Lot of work I guess to scan all that and make it happen

I mentioned earlier my neighbor can do this.  The only problem is I need to find a boat with a pencil rub of the decal to make sure the size is right.  He can scan the picture image and make it but it will be slightly distorted, which will only show because the gelcoat fading from the old decal.  If this is not an issue, he can make them from the picture and some measurements.  It will be "two" decals, the white top letters and the black outline, not a printed black and white.  I will show him the site and he can get on and price and explain what he needs.

I am thinking maybe I can use a black wax pencil (or similar-maybe even a Sharpie and wipe off after with acetone?) and trace the outline of the faded edge of decal shadow  (mine is VERY obvious now that decal is removed)  then trace that outline on tracing paper, then cut it out in black vinyl and apply to boat then reduce size of each letter on a copier by say 6-7% or what ever gives me approximately the 1/4"-3/8" reveal and cut out white letters to then lay over the black and from anything over a few feet away it would look great probably....? ANybody care to opine?  D

Thats exactly what I am going to do, except I got new color so I dont have to worry about the fade. I traced mine before the color went on....... just waiting to get her a little closer to being complete before I worry about the decals.

Ok, so I lied. I am not going to put any plastic graphics on at all! Thats because a friend of my dads (Dad is a painter and friend is a pinstriper/sign painter, is going to make stencils, dad is going to paint all the letters and friend is going to hand stripe the outside of everything.

All this and its going to cost me less than doing them in plastic.

Plus Dad is going to clear coat over the finished product.  Im pumped!!!

After more research I found I can use a fine Sharpie and trace the shadow of the old sticker nicely (acetone wipes Sharpie right off like it was never ther....)and trace with tracing paper--and will then lay tracing over black vinyl and handcut in vinyl in BLACK first then will photocopy each letter individually and reduce by whatever percent is @ a 1/4" reveal and then handcut in white and lay over black--then will lay both on hull and it will look like a solid sticker in white w/black outline....will post results with images when done...D
