Welcome Donald kurth
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:04:10 AM »
I had the pleasure to talking with Mr. Kurth yesterday afternoon, he and his wife are original owners of a 1985 Advance. They both ski behind their boat every other day in the summer. That may not sound impressive to many on the forum but if he reveals his age (I won't) you will be impressed. WELCOME to the the American Skier Family!

That's very cool. Definitely piqued my curiosity. It's good to hear these kinds of stories.

A few years ago my ski partner called me up and asked if he could bring an "old friend" along on our weekly ski session. He said that this friend wanted to see us barefoot and wanted to ski himself. My ski partner (who is now 65 himself) has a lot of long time ski club friends (both young and old) so when I hear "old friend" I never take that as an age reference but of a long time skiing acquaintance reference. I was quite surprised when this "old friend" of his turned out to be 85!!! He kindly asked if he could do a slalom run after my ski partner and I were done barefooting. He crawled out on the swim platform and strapped on a very well used but gorgeous Maja wooden ski and jumped in the water. He had a hip replacement and hadn't skied in a few years so it took him a few tries to do a deepwater start but he did finally make it up and skied a lap around the lake. He was absolutely thrilled to be able to do that and I was completely in awe of him.
I'm sure that many of you know who Banana George Blair was. I got the pleasure of meeting him several times and seeing him barefoot when he was 90. An absolutely fabulous ambassador for the sport. People like this keep me motivated to do what I love to do.

When people run down to the lake to see what is making that noise, you've succeeded.
