1988 351 Indmar engine shuts down
« on: May 26, 2014, 01:59:35 PM »
I had the engine turn off while pulling skiers and tubers this weekend. 2100-2300 Rpm then suddenly off. Put in neutral and it fired back up. Later in the day it did the same thing (roughly the same RPM) but this time, after restarting without any issue's,  I pulled back on to the shore station and it wouldn't turn off. Pulled the negative off the battery to shut the engine down. Reconnected then there was no power to the instrument panel. Came back after a few minutes then there was power to the dash.  It will sit there and idle all day with no issues. It will pull at 3000+ RPM without issue. The problem seems to be in the 2000-2500 rpm slot and very random at that.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Most common cause for your described problem is a faulty ignition switch, after that some real diagnostics will be required to trouble-shoot the problem. electrical gremlins are difficult to find when they only act up occasionally. My guess is the rpm relationship is more a hull vibration at that rpm. Time to find a voltmeter.
BTW I should have some main engine harness cables on the parts site this week. Ignition switches added this morning.
