recently, my father's 77 seems to go through a starter annually.  He started using real marine starters 3 years ago.  What could cause this?  It's now annually.

Does it turn over very hard? Or does it seem to turn over freely? If it turns over very hard you might need to put the timing light on it.

Water trapped in the bellhousing is #1 cause for premature starter failure. The answer is in the bad starter, are the bearings shot & nasty looking with rusty crusty stuff??
