Flywheel gear replacement
« on: July 20, 2012, 02:03:06 PM »
Hi everbody  I have a1983 American Skier just pulled the transmission for a rebuild. Looking at the flywheel the gear needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if its ok to use a standard automotive gear for a replacement,(just the gear). And if so, do you get a truck ring gear or what?   Thanks kwcastle

If its a Ford based engine you should be able to take the gear you have off turn it over and reinstall. Something you cannot do on a GM based engine. Just a thought. That is unless you are missing teeth or something.

I know you can go to Ford and get a ring gear cheaper than most Marine distributers.  I don't recall the application that you had to request to get the right one and the days of just telling the parts guy the tooth count and diameter is long gone (seems if you don't have the vehicle make, model, adn if it has a/c or not they can't give you any answers!)  Ron or Dan should be able to hook you up with one that will definitly work.  I have heard of flipping but for the $50-100 for the part that seems easier than doing it twice (half a worn tooth will break faster than a full tooth, in theory).  Support your local American Skier Represenative! (aka Ron or Dan)
