Impeller shreaded!
« on: July 02, 2012, 11:15:03 AM »
I put the boat in the water last weekend, cranked up ran it about half mile and parked! Got back in about hour later and it had vapor locked! Well I got it running after a little work and drove out into the lake to ski my wife when I noticed that the temp. gauge was maxed out! I notice that the motor slowed way down but didn't die! I killed the engine immediately, call a friend for a tow! When He got there we checked the impeller and it looked like a dog had chewed it up! Needless to say no more skiing. My Question is how do I find all of those broken pieces without taking the engine apart! I have ordered 2 new impellers Jabsco 18777-0001 and will put it in as soon as I get them! Whats the best way to prime the system before I crank it on a hose! Should I be worried about anything else since this happened! Thanks for the help!

My Question is how do I find all of those broken pieces without taking the engine apart!

Simple answer. You don't. Start at the thermostat housing. It'll have to come off. That's where most of it should be. Might as well replace the thermostat while you have it out. Then you need to looka t the circulating pump. That may be able to be checked without removing if you can feel the impeller blades by removing the hose connections. If not, that needs to come off too. Then you can check the inlets into the exhaust manifolds. If they're all clean, you're probably OK.

You don't ave to prime the system. The RWP will suck the water as soon as you start it. You do need to verify that it's sucking first by doiing the bucket test. Disconnect the raw water intake at the hull fitting or the oil cooler inlet and make up a hose extension that runs over the side gunnel to a 5 gallon bucket filled with water. If you start the engine it should suck the bucket dry in 15-30 seconds. If it doesn't, you still have blockage or the sysetm is sucking air instead of water and you need to find out where that issue is at. 15 or 30 seconds without water will not hurt anything at all.

Did you wreck the engine running like this? Possibly, but you really won't know until you get it cooling as it should be again. First things first.
When people run down to the lake to see what is making that noise, you've succeeded.

Thank you, I will do all of this as soon as I get the new impeller! This may be a dumb question but where is the circulating pump? Your not talking about where the impeller goes are you!

The circulating pump is on the front of the engine that would normally be considered the water pump on an automotive engine. That circulates water through the engine after the thermostat opens up. Pieces of the impeller could be in that after it fragged.

Follow the above instructions plus the following:
You have an ECM controlled engine & it sensed the overheating triggering a "limp-home" mode which limits rpm & reduces timing and goes to full rich mixture to try to save itself.
Pay attention to the exhaust system for leaks, it is not designed to withstand 1200 deg. exhaust, including the fibreglass tubes & rubber elbows.

I finally got my impellar in and put it in, checked all of the hoses and pulled the thermastat out all looked good and didnt find any of the fragments. I attached the hose and bucket to it and started the boat. There is almost no suction with idealing but if you give it gas it will suck the bucket dry in 10 secs. is that normal or what should I do next! I didn't pull the manifolds to look for fragments. Thanks for any help!
