1990 Eagle
« on: August 07, 2010, 05:36:23 AM »
I am trying to find some info on a 1990 Eagle, and it appears that you guys would be the subject matter experts hahaha.

What were the floors and stringers constructed of?
How powerful was the 454 option?
LH or RH rotation?
Fuel tank size?

Thanks for all the help!

I dont know about the Eagle--is that a A.S. boat?  But my 1980 American Skier Luxury Skier has cypress stringers matted and resined to hull and marine plywood floor also resined and SS screwed to stringers--there are people MUCH more expert than I on here though...I promise!  D

Yes, the AS Eagle was a 24' boat with a built in swim step and the option for a 454...I want to say that production years were 87ish to 91ish?

The Eagle was a 24' open bow (big brother to the Volante Open Bow) available in direct drive & stern drive (Eagle II) and Closed bow cuddy (small go-fast boat) in stern drive only. The stern drive models were actually 25' boats with a unique multi-part hull mold, full width teak swim platform with a hinging center section that lifter with the drive. The floors depending on model year were plywood on the early models & composite on newer ones, the 454 was rated around 330hp, the inboard drives are LH and the fuel tank was big. I would have to dig out an old brochure to define "big". (FYI, I have a 1999 model Eagle prototype v-drive behind my shop)

ron, thanks for the info...any idea on approx where to delineate early and late years?  Just curious on when wood would become a concern for the floor and stringers...

The year may not matter...   If your thinking of buying a boat of that age / size / cost, get it inspected by someone that knows inboard boats, preferably someone who knows AM Skiers, and knows where the problem areas are typically found.   From what I've heard on here and talking to Ron, the stringers are probably fine.  The floors may be solid as a rock depending upon how well or how badly the boat was maintained / stored over the years.  It seems that Ron paid a lot of attention to the stringers when building and most of these boats dont have stringer issues - I'd concentrate on a thorough inspection of the floors, hull, especially the transom, and the mechanical, electrical, wiring, etc.

i agree with you to some point.  at the same time, it would be nice to have the knowledge of where the potential problem areas could be before ever seeing the boat.  i have a thorough knowledge of inboards, especially nautiques.  just trying to get up to speed on the AS stuff...

Probably the easiest way to determine composite/wood floors is to pull up the rear center floor & see what was holding the center floor up, if it's a molded fiberglass "ledge" it's a composite floor, if it's a strip of wood or by now perhaps a substitute material screwed to the stringer to support the center floor, it has laminated wood cored floors.
