AS floor project--comments and questions?
« on: August 06, 2010, 07:08:32 AM »
After a long hiatus this summer of working on and riding (but mostly working on) our other passion--Kawi jet-ski's--the old standup style.....I am back to the boat!

Literally this morning actually--am going out to buddy's shop to cut the last little 2" lip of old floor on inner hull edge.out of boat.  Found a great deal on some overstock Marine plywood someone else bough for a pontoon project and did not use and now they are stuck w/it and want to sell for about 1/2 price--Yay!

That actually leads me to a question--I was wanting to put 3/4" ply down--any issue with this?   Not sure what was original as mine was replaced poorly at least twice in the boat.

And Oh BTW--after reading the post that was gearing up for Wiki,  I guess I have the Luxury Skier edition in Tangerine and Cream....  Mine has combing panels, rear cushions, glovebox under Pass seat, pass grab rail, etc...

I'm sure Ron will chime I'm with much more specifics, but if some people cover the old floor with new, I'm sure you have plenty of room for an extra quarter of an inch. If it was half inch to begin with.

ALSo after much research and Ron's comment regarding integrity of these hulls I think I am going to go "naked" under the floor (no flotation foam) and add just a little resin to stringers before new floor goes in.  and then going to drill some 1/2" holes at bottom of stringers in fore/middlde/aft about each 3' for drainage--maybe put some very short (width of stringer ? ) PVC tubes or "drains" in case water does get in there so it can get from outer stringer channels to center channel of hull where bilge and drain is located..

QUESTION:  should I mat/resin inside edge of floor to inside of inner stringer (where pylon frame/engine mount plates) are bolted?  to do this I assume I need to remove that peice of framework because it is flush w/top of stringer, then re-inistall it....sound right to create a "sealed" floor? thx DOUG

Old floors were 1/2" plywood, the additional 1/4" may cause some headaches under the "L" seat assuming you are removing the deck.
"Marine Plywood",  I have yet to see a pontoon boat with marine plywood, they usually use pressure treated plywood & leave the underside naked. Pressure treated plywoods from most sources have way way too high of a moisture content to absorb resins, I never reccomend using PT woods in boats, they can be used on your trailer though. The cheap way is to use exterior grade A-B plywood with a laminate of CSM on the underside & structural glass on the topside tying the floor to the side walls.

the wood says "Marine Plywood" w/factory stamping/printing on it where it was rolled on off the printer, so I will assume it is what it claims to be--also looks like marine, not PT.  I had thought of the L-seat issue after the fact but fortunately I have a sheet of 1/2" still also in the shop and was thinking of using it under that section.  I would have a 1/4" difference but if I left it just under the section fore of the ski pylon I think it would address the L-seat issue.  Althought cutting the recessed battery hole should be interesting--as Inoticed it hangs below the floor an inch or two or three--have to measure and see. Thanks for input Ron--will post pics as I go.D
