I need a new winch for my boat trailer.  My boat is 2800 lbs, but do I really need a winch rated this high?  Or will a 2000 lb or 2500 lb winch be sufficient?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the winch is suppose to be rated for the weight of the boat. After all, it's not lifting dead weight. I believe it is suppose to be rated at half the gross weight of your boat.

Whats the cost difference? If the bigger one would fit and isn't much more expensive, why not?

I guess I could of just looked at my original.  It says it is rated for 1700 lbs.  I went with a 2000 lb dual gear drive by Attwood.
