Didnt hear anything strange, didnt feel anything strange, 2 trips around the lake just above idle to warm her up a bit and then to half throttle....... engine grenaded.

Rod cap blew off, and didnt come off with the connecting rod bolt holes with it. Havent opened it up yet but the scope tells the story all to well. ( this is why dizzy came out of hole if anyone had seen that post ) have not got around to looking at it since then until now

Time for a short block, vortec style.

This may have just put a damper on the reunion situation as far as me making it is concerned.

HUGE BUMMER!!!  So sorry to hear that    :'(   Hopefully, you'll be able to get it fixed or replaced by June.   If not, come out anyway - you can ride & ski with me & mine!

Well boys and girls, I pulled the engine day before yesterday...... found the #8 rod cap partially missing. Funny though, the ARP studs and nuts were still locked into place. Ive talked with a few engine builder friends, they all said the same thing; Ive never seen a rod cap break that way before.

Damn the bad luck. The good news is it was not a mistake from the build which to some may not seem much but to me is very important. I have never built an engine that has come apart (at least not bye MY lack of attention). If one did come apart it was operator error (idiot drained oil and didnt replace it) or part failure (damn rod cap as described above).

Ill try to get a shot of the culprit to put up. Its the craziest thing Ive see come out of the bottom end of an engine.

Damn, that sucks!!!!

It almost sounds like there was a stress crack or the metal had to be fatiged somehow and just finally let go.

Either that or it was not checked properly when the rods were supposedly gone over bye the machine shop. Bearings didnt fail, no sign of elevated temp or welding of the bearings to the rod or cap.

Oh well. The past is the past, and Im picking up 2 motors in the afternoon. 1 running Im going to throw the cam and heads on I have and run and a Vortec roller Im going to build in the mean time.

Dont think it was smooth to start with or anything. Dad spent hours smoothing it out. The outer part (part that is usually under the covering) was just hand laid glass and wanst flat or pretty at all.

Good deal Mike.

At least you have something to keep you on the water and you can take your time building a firebreather!!!

Very cool.
