Hi All
« on: September 13, 2011, 08:51:32 PM »
I'm a newbie, just picked up a 1985 Advance which needs a little work.  Prior owner has pulled up the decks due to rot, so I need to replace and carpet.  Trailer is solid, has new tires/wheels/hubs, needs new decking and carpet.  Engine shows under 900 hours, has had soft plugs replaced, and has a new Holley, new Pertronix Marine distributor, new MSD Blaster coil, MSD wires and new plugs.  Haven't got it running yet, but close.  Dizzy was installed sdrawkcab, that was the main problem.  That's now corrected, and plug wires/firing order confirmed correct.  It was flooding, I installed an inline FPR, now I seem to have no fuel reaching Mr. Holley.  I can at least get it to fire/backfire by pouring gas into the carb top.  Timing is still off, and perhaps I need a new fuel pump...  Minor stuff.

I live in Oregon, splitting time between Bend and Hood River area.  Always wanted a classic tournament boat, and this one was offered to me for less than the price of the new ignition parts, so I couldn't say no!  The AS is my second boat, first was a 19.5' Seaswirl v hull with a 350 Chevy powering an OMC outdrive -- we called it the sleeper, it looked like a mild-mannered little runabout, but with a steep 2 blade prop and the happy SBC, it would push 65 knots...  Normally we ran it set up for skiing, so a shallower 3 blade prop.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello.  I'm sure the questions will follow!

Welcome Aboard!!!  Ron & Dan can help you quickly figure out your mechanical issues - dont sound too serious.  Fix the floors and you'll be golden!!!

Phil,  You know Ron cant spell "computer"...  at least not any better than I can... thats not saying much  ;)  Just tell him to ask his lovely wife and she'll show him how to post bigger pics  ;)

Hope everyone is busy winterizing thier boats - except you lucky southern boys.  My last day on the water is Sunday - I'll be wearing a black arm band cause I'll be in mourning after I pull her out of the lake...  Summer went by so fast...   :o

LoL.

Winterizing? Heck we have at least another month here in Wisco. It's just starting to get good out there, all the weekend warriors are getting off the lakes. I'll take cold smooth water over rough warm water any day. Though I must admit, I am looking forward to snow skiing this year and plan to get out west with my family.

A quuick update on my no-start situation -- thanks to the knowledgeable members of this forum, my suspicion that my boat had the wrong starter was confirmed.  Wrong as in, rotates the engine the wrong direction!

I'm shopping a replacement.  I suppose if I lived on the gulf I could just put 'er in the water and suck up petro through the exhaust, but...   ;D

Ron has posted on another forum somwhere on here the part number you need.  Maybe someone recalls and can point him in that direction, or just call Ron and order one from him direct would be easier.

Found it.

Quote
Wrong starter, an ARCO 70201 is a CCW starter for reverse rotation engines, you need the CW starter, the old style #70110 (direct drive) or the replacement 70200 (gear reduction) American Skiers are "Marine Left Hand" or CCW as viewed from the rear, or CW as viewed from the front AKA std. automotive rotation.

Before buying that starter you didn't say if it was a top mount or std bottom mount starter.
