Shaft Log Replace
« on: April 14, 2016, 07:41:19 AM »
My boat gets a decent amount of water in it just sitting there. I have to almost always run the bilge pump. I replaced the stuffing box and re caulked the hull to deck joint in the back around the swim platform. I can notice some water coming in around the shaft log through the fiber glass. What I cant tell is if that is where all or most of my water is coming from. I would maybe like to cut out the shaft log and re fiberglass it. I have never fiber glassed anything before. How big of a project would this be?
Thanks

That would be a pretty big project but I can't imagine that the glass is actually leaking around it. Did you replace the hose with the stuffing box when you replaced it? The clamp around that hose might need to be tightened up or the hose even replaced if you didn't do it with the stuffing box. That would suck to have to take it all apart again just for that.
Before I replaced that hose and stuffing box on my Skier the original hose had some type of sealer put on it before it got clamped on around the shaft log. I had a heck of a time getting it off when I replaced it. I didn't put any type of sealer on it when I replaced it.

When people run down to the lake to see what is making that noise, you've succeeded.

I replaced the hose. It is hard to get the hose to fit between the bottom of the hull and the bottom of the shaft log. But I can see a small leak coming out of the fiberglass. I cant see all of it because the hose is int the way. I wish there was a way to leave the shaft in and plug the hole up so that I can take the hose and slide it up and check for leaks.

I did notice that the new shaft logs from Ron dont require to be fiberglassed back in just screwed in and sealed with my guess epoxy or something. You just have to cut the old one out.

I would bet that the leak is actually from the hose to shaft log seal. Especially if the you admit that the hose is a tight fit between the hull.
I would get it on the trailer and you should be able to undo the clamp and slide the hose and stuffing box together up the shaft enough to check around that shaft log for anything that preventing you from a good seal. You might need to do a little filing or sanding to make a smooth surface for sealing. You might even try a little 4200 around the base of the hose when you slide it back on before you clamp it.

Maybe Ron or Dan would have another option to look at too.

Thanks Ill try to do that. Ill try to get some pics as soon as I can but im almost positive a little water comes out of the side. I Still think the majority of the water is coming in from the back. Next time its on the water Im going to do some more investigating. Boy its a pain.
