American Skier hull- Master Craft?
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:10:20 PM »
I read somewhere on this site that American Skier used a Master Craft Hull for some of its models. At least I think it was this site. Does anyone know? I haven't been able to re-locate it.

I can assure you that American Skiers were not "splashed" from M/C or any other boat. (Splashed is a boat builder term for copying a hull shape) The closest this comes is from the origins of A/S. In the early 70's the Ski Nautique was the skiers choice for a trick skier (tall sharp wakes) and the new MasterCraft was the skiers choice for slalom (lower wakes) and the Hydrodyne twin rig was the choice for jumpers (low wake & rock solid pull) Ken Elkind had the idea of blending the features of both inboards to create a great slalom and trick wake platform, thus the hull shape at the transom was similar to the CC and the mid-section of the hull was wide like the MC. Anyone who looks at the 18' American Skier from above will immediately notice the very pronounced shape of the hull, wide in the middle, and narrow at the transom......kind of like my shape these days.

Ok cool. I was looking at some of my old pictures of my dads 86 Master Craft and remembered that post somewhere. I started looking at the hulls. To be honest I never bought any of these inboards for the skiing, that was a bonus, it was the look and sound. The inventor of the muffler and single exhaust is on my "coal" list.  I love the 86 MC hull and was looking at the AS hulls after 84 and they have a sweet look in the water too. I like it better than mine (84) I think. I may start looking to trade or find a project.

My first involvement with hull shape /design was with the Advance Model released in 1985. This was shaped from a 18' hull with the nose stretched out, and the aft hull sides flared out above the running surface, hence the "chine notch" found in every Advance. Perhaps the most complicated ski boat bottom out there is still the TBX, if you ever get the chance peek under the boat & look at that bottom, it was a laminators nightmare.
