Tranny slip?

Hey I have a 1975 American skier and I think the tranny is starting to slip. It sometimes for no reason revs up quickly and jumps into gear. Any idea how I can reduce this problem? Or how much a new tranny could be?

 ensure the fluid level is correct
and that the cable is adjust properly
typical installation - the cable pulls for forward and pushes for reverse
a worn / stretched cable may not pull enough to fully engage forward
new trans is some tall green rebuild is about 2/3 the cost near $1200

one more thing to check:

(particularly for those few with out sea water strainers )

remove the water hose from the inlet side of the trans cooler and inspect for debris
a golf ball size wad of weeds will raise the operating temps
clean it out and reinstall the hose

Well boat stopped working today I think the tranny poohed taking boat to shop.

You can rebuild it. A decent price for rebuilding is about $800. If you know somebody it can be done for considerably less. Don't even consider a new one. You're talking about $2K or more.
It's pretty common for them to need rebuilding sooner or later.
I would also suggest replacing the damper on the flywheel when it gets rebuilt. Easy to do while the tranny is out of it and that's probably shot too. That should be about $150.

I was selling New ZF 1:1 gears last year in the $1200 range, B/W 1:1 run around $1600 these are new gears but you have to paint it yourself.
