Best Carpet Glue? '80 AS
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:37:02 PM »
I picked up some VERY nice carpet in Elkhart from the Bennington factory...my friend picks up boats there all the time and got 2 really big nice "end-rolld" of textured carpet.  My boat is all restored to very near OEM but despite that I just coudnt bear to re-install the original brown carpet--mine is tangerine/cream.  So I got a very nice khaki that goes with the cream well.....

My actual retail question now...best glue?

My dad is getting ready to do his pontoon floor and has 3gals of marine adhesive that the carpet folks sold him (marine distributor, marine carpet)--he is going to have an extra gal I thnk so I could use it for free...my concern was he has to apply it with a trowel(very fine toothed spreader) and let it dry after carpet laid out.

I have seen others use weldwood contact adhesive.

Just not sure which way to go--this is a relatively heavy grade carpet---

Best choice? thanks DOUG

I cant say best choice because I have never used any other, but Ron has stated somewhere in print here on the forum he uses the same red can weldwood that I used.

Im having no problems with it thus far.

Best I can do for ya bud.

I use both types of adhesives, assuming you are using marine grade carpet (has a rubber backing) Bennington builds high end pontoons so the carpet you got was probably pretty good stuff.  I use the water based latex adhesives (I use Chapco Outdoor Carpet Adhesive) for large areas and applies with the fine tooth trowel. The down side is it takes 24-48 hours to cure. Areas where I use the traditional rubber cement (Weldwood Original red can) is near the edges where the carpet needs to fold over an edge, center floors, lids, & any other small part. I simply brush the adhesive on the part & back side of the carpet, allow them to flash off 5-10 min. then stick them together. I am about to lay down all new carpets in my rescue Advance & plan on needing 2 gal. of water based adhesive & 1 gal of the stinky stuff.

Used the red can weldwood and it worked great so far.. got all the carpet on the floor done except for the drivers foot rest.... just gotta do the sides of hull inside now and the transom board/fuel tank access board!  NOne of it is easy because all curved and groovy...only straight line inside this boat is along the engine bay!  Lots of careful custom cutting with a SUPER sharp razor knife.....

And the Bennington is also VERY hi-grade...way better than anything I found anywhere else...ended up with 2 8.5'x15.5' rolls for free!  ;D

thanks DOUG

This may sound stupid, but it took me a while to figure it out............ Use carpet razors, they are much much sharper and last longer than regular blades.

Ask me how I know.

Got it all in except for the drivers side hull/footrest area...I had forgotten that there was a piece of aluminum trim that went down on the seam between side and floor carpets...it REALLY makes a difference in how it looks as far as finish...this Bennington carpet is really nice too and the color came out perfect with the cream/tangerine....not an easy color to combo to match carpet to w/out using the old OEM brown color....here are a couople pics off my phone....sorry for porrer quality but digicam batt was dead...

Did not like the textured "leaf motif" in the carpet at first but it actually looks better in real life than in pics...

enjoy DOUG
