Speedometers
« on: June 07, 2010, 07:22:13 PM »
So I got both my speedo's dialed with a GPS last week and they where working great! one trip across a very choppy lake and the left speedo is now very slow to go up and gets stuck. The right speedo only works half the time know.  I am going to start buy blowing compressed air from the gauge side through the tubes and see if that helps.  Any other suggestions?

ha ha.  The only reason I still have functioning speedos is because my wife insists that she needs them.   I just use the portable GPS with a suction mount.  They are just more trouble than they're worth.

Airguide speedometers had "balance tubes" mounted at the rear of the boat on each side of the fuel tank.  They are a brass tube that the speedo hose from the pickup feeds into and then on to the speedo itself.  They can become plugged with silt, sand, etc. and cause readings like you have described.  You can try flushing them out with water, I would try taking them out to do this, and blow the lines clear while your there.  DO NOT OVERPRESSURIZE, you can blow the line, caps off the balance tube, or the speedometer itself.

Do I have to remove the tank to get to them?

I don't believe so. I think they are on the sides, just in front of the tank.

Don't use more than 20-30psi to blow back from the speedo head, I measured my brother's pressure once & he's good for about 18psi.
The problem as described is most likely the pitots themselves, find a fine number drill set & carefully clean them out.

I am going to clean the pitots first as the brass cylinders are directly behind my tank and I am in no mood to pull the tank right now.
