Engine Repair/Maintenance - All Ski Boats / Holley 4160
« Last post by Jterr on July 25, 2020, 06:43:29 AM »
Just rebuilt and installed carb on my 83 PCM 351, engine starts and seems to idle ok until I give it gas, then stutters or shuts off.
Question what to check as a starting adjustments as I can't seem to find paperwork?
Thanks

You need to verify if it fuel or ignition related. Try plumbing a small gas can to the fuel pump when it happens and run off that. It'll confirm where to start looking.

On the third or fourth skier boat hesitates and is sluggish.  I had the problem before and I just put a new carb on from national carb, cleaned anti-siphon and made sure bent was clean.  Runs perfectly normal for 30-40 minutes then appears to be fuel starved.  1982 skier, looking for anymore suggestions.  Fuel pump? Fuel lines?

Ended up selling the boat a couple weeks ago. Wasn’t really planning on it, but wasn’t finding much time to go boating, and needed some cash more than my second boat. Take care everyone, thanks for the help, enjoy your boats, and stay safe !

General Inboard Ski Boat Discussions / Re: Tachometer

There should be a gray signal lead on the back of the tach going to the coil. Don't remember for sure which side but you can verify continuity and connection.
There is also a switch on the back of the tach to set it for 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. That switch can get sticky or dirty over time. Cycle the switch several times to try and clean the contacts inside. I've seen that fix them albeit for a short term.
These tachs don't last forever and they do go bad. I've had to replace mine and I know of numerous others who have had to replace them.

Over winter my tachometer quit. What is the best way to troubleshoot. I did replace alternator.

Your Advance is a very good slalom ski boat.  It has a good wake from long-line to 22'-off.  There is a rooster-tail at 22'off at most speeds.  Going shorter on the slalom line, it only gets better @32-36 mph.

If you get into shortline slalom, this hull remains a good trainer boat.  Of course, the new offerings from the majors are state-of-the-art, but our old ski boats remain quite comparable.

The original coil bracket positioned the coil several inches from the cylinder head on the back of the engine on my 88 Advance with the Indmar SP-300 engine.  I still have the original resistor limiting the "run" coil voltage.  The original coil failed after 20-years of service.  I replaced it with a MSD Blaster coil and have had no problems since.

My only question with that when we built these trailers we "adjusted" the fenders to the chassis, then cut and fit the fender boards. We tried pre-cutting fender boards to a pattern but there were too many variables so we went back to cutting boards to fit each one. Fender looks like the one we carry.
