This is mine when I bought her in Sept. (before restoration started)
-
These are progression pictures during restoration.... (Dec 2010) I'm having questions... if anybody can offer their Skier knowledge???
-
Id be glad to help if I can, mine is an 86 so they are completely different. These guys here know the answers though..... just ask away.
Im from Sylacauga, my grandparents and uncle owned lake hill marina on the north side of the 280 bridge, until Russell took the land back and decided to build the monster of a marina that is there now. I live in FLA now, but try to get to the lake a couple of times a year.
-
Love the shots of the boat, BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
-
Wow Lake Hill Marina!! It's a small world!! I hopefully will finish my floor by Monday (Jan 17th) and have the motor completed by the end of next week. It has been a project, but honestly it has been a lot of fun!! I can't wait to have it on the water!! I feel like I am going to be "Cock of the Walk" on Lake Martin this summer...haha!! I'm joshua.neighbors@gmail.com if you facebook.... look me up and add me!!
-
What kind of questions do you have??
-
Ok guys.... here is the new floor... went a different route... Please tell me what you think
-
RonT... From the Pics I have posted.... Can you tell exactly what model my boat is?
-
I believe there were only two models during the early years. I *think* you have the Lux but I'm sure Ron or someone else will give you a definitive answer...
What kind of wood is that floor?
-
It is Cypress.... I couldn't afford Teak. I am going to keep it oiled like Teak! I was just trying something a little different.
-
So your not planning on putting carpet over it? I think it looks pretty good. Cypress should hold up to weathering pretty good too. Do you think it will be slippery when it get's wet?
-
Im with Phil on this one, you oil that stuff (wich I understand the reasoning behind it) when it gets wet I think your gonna slip and slide
-
????? I don't know fellows. I'm kinda thinking it will be like my teak and not be slippery.... as teak oil is penetrating oil and I will be wiping of the residual. But no... was not going to place carpet over it. You guys have me thinking now.....
-
There was only one mold set back then, the original 18' model simply known at an American SKier with a few variations. Believe it or not, back then a teak floor was an option. Although I never built one that way I did see one that was shipped to So. Africa. The boat was built as ussual with a glassed over plywood floor, then narrow teak strips were added lengthwise on top of the flooring. I did notice your engine removal process seperated at the bellhousing, I've never seen that before, standard proceedures remove the engine/trans combination from the boat leaving only the shaft.
-
I pulled my engine away from tranny as well.
-
REMINDER: When you pull the engine from the trans always check the drive dampner, this is "interface" between the trans input splined shaft & the flyweel, it's a disk that bolts to the flywheel with a series of springs in the dampner plate that rust, corrode, wear out etc. Older boats probably want to change these while apart, unless it's a low hour (under 1K hrs) or very clean looking.
-
Ron, What exactly does the dampner do? Is it a sort of clutch?
-
Here are the latest pics of the boat. Tell me what you think.... but I'm really proud of her! What do you think about blue stripes?
-
Wow, looks good! Did you paint it? You should start a "Album" in the media/photo gallery.
-
Im going to go with a yes on the blue stripe due to the graphics I am seeing!
-
Trailer looks nice to but the quality of the photos is pretty blurry.
-
For Phil .... I am posting better quality pictures... and yes I am painting it myself.... I think it is turning out really good
Gong... I tested a few spots with the Blue... What do you think?
RonT... Thanks for the Dampner advice... It will come in Handy really soon... an I got the Idea for the wood floor from seeing an earlier American Skier B/W magazine spread... the spread is actually on this site.... Do you think mine takes away from the boat?
-
Thanks for the pics! Looking good!
-
I rebuilt my boat almost completely, so take this as you will! Everyone has an opinion which is fine, but do what you want to do!!! Its your boat!!!
With that being said, I like the blue stripe idea! I will say this, unless it is just the photos, I would go with a darker blue...... but again, that is just my opinion.
Either way, get that thing done!!! That will make 3 of us on Lake Martin this summer!!! We will surely have to get together at the rock or something.
-
Ok... Got interior almost complete.... just have some small little things to tweek... then we are on the water!! The engine is almost ready and the windshields will be installed this week!
RonT.... thank you for the advice on the engine/trans reinstall.... the guy doing my engine said he will make sure tht it is checked!
Gong.... I am Lake Martin bound... looking forward to an exciting summer..... nd really look forward to hanging out with my on kind...lol
Hope I'm doing the brand justice with my restoration

Hey ReJek-- looking good--I am Doug (56mulberry) with the Tangerine/Cream '80 AS. I have been on a hiatus with the boat and the forum most of the winter but am going to hit it again starting Mar 1st. Plan to have it in the water by Mem day this year--even if I have to row it across the lake----And to make the world even smaller--my inlaws own both of the houses right next to the lot that is the old Lake Hill marine. They have owned those lots on Lk Martin since 1995 and just moved there in 2008--we actually hang in that slough every Sunday all summer..I live in Alex CIty since 2005...I'll hit you up on FB see where you're at....,.Doug
PS--what did you do abouot a bubble script side hull graphic? I am trying to get a few folks together that want to help me pay a graphic designer to scan and clean up a copy of it soo we can use it to reproduce the sticker in a variety of sizes--lemme know if interested....Doug

ReJek,
Looking good man! Great work.
-
Looks great, but we have to do something with that shift knob.......

I used to live in that slough Doug!!!
Did you get the graphics I sent you?
-
Ok.... here she is.... put her on the lake last weekend!! Amazing ride!! What do you think??
-
NOW THAT IS ONE FREAKIN' GORGEOUS BOAT!!!!! Absolutely ONE OF A KIND... No argument there!!! The floor & engine look fantastic! The color combo looks great too!
Couple questions: Does it drain water between the floor planks? If so, I'm assuming there are water routes / drainage holes through the stringers in between the outboard / side compartments and the bilge for drainage? Where did you get the forward, aft & side AM Skier graphics?
And... the MOST important question of all: WHEN CAN YOU DO MY BOAT!?!?!?
And the second most important question: Are you coming to the 1st Annual AM Skier Boat Reunion on June 17th - 19th on KY Lake????
Again!! Great job!!
Joel
-
Were you on Lake Martin this weekend? If so how dare you and not stop by my slough so I can see you Am Skier?!!!!! ;D Looking good!!!!---How do you like the way that Hi-Flyin' pole pulls on that boat? Doug
-
Joel..... ok... yes it does drain... I ran drainage lines from each "section" to the bilge/drain @ the motor. However each section can't hold or even take on much water as I filled them pretty good with foam in preperation for that. Also the logos on the front and back actually came from this page.... (top right corner...haha) I found a guy locally who did them for me really cheap. Also he did my striping as they are vinyl to ensure they were perfect and straight. He can do more just let me know!! I'm getting another shield like 18" x 18" for the back of my wifes tahoe. Got to "represent" haha!!!
The decals on both sides say www.cathouseperformancemarine.com (http://www.cathouseperformancemarine.com)... Mr. Steve helped me out so much with the motor.... it is all I could do to repay the favor and my gratitude!!
As for doing another....Hmmmmm I don't know... I'm very proud of her and she turned alot of heads this weekend.... more than I ever imagined. But I might retire from restorations.... as I went from a chevy truck to a Bronco.... to a full winter with the boat... I'm spent...haha
-
Doug.... I am def coming your way.... soon!! Last weekend was totally trial run. I put in at Wind Creek and stayed toward Pineywood and Elkahatchee as that is where "our" cabin is. The big water was just way to choppy and rough for me to brave.... I promised her I would take it easy on her as she hasn't been in the water since '05. I won't be up this weekend as I will be showing off on Jordan (by request,) but email me and I will get your location again for possibly next weekend!!
As for the fly high... I haven't pulled anything yet. Again it was a test and tune weekend. I will let you know after this weekend.
What did you think of the Bimini? I can't tell you how much that was just being in the right place at the right time!! (all I can say is $110 and brand new)
-
Joel.... also as for the reunion.... I'm a 24/24 firefighter and I have to have my leave in by Nov for the next year. So I will not be able to make this reunion.... but as long as you guys select a date by Nov 2011 (hoping you guys decide during this reunion) for 2012, I will never miss another one!!
I can't tell you how nervous I am for RonT's vote of approval!!
-
Where are you on Elkahatchee? In Raintree or what? We are right by the 280 river bridge near River North Marina--
-
Enjoyed reading this thread. I am actually the current owner of this boat and have had it for almost 2 years. I absolutely love it!
-
Welcome KEVN

Good to see the form back! Here is a pic I took this weekend out on the AL River!
