Title: How many quarts of oil...???
Post by: Joel on October 09, 2010, 04:55:48 PM
How many quarts of oil does a Ford 351 W take?

Also, what oil pressure should it be during idle at around 600 or 700 rpm?  I'm reading 60 psi at idle - looks kinda high to me...

Winterizing almost compete  :)

Thanks,  Joel

I just noticed that I asked this question before and Phil answered it with 5.5 quarts.  My problem is it looks like the oil is well above the Safe line on the dip stick and I havent even put in 4 quarts...  The oil is clean / clear on the stick so I believe I got out all the old oil (or as much that will drain out of my drain hose) and replaced the filter...  Kinda puzzled with this one...???

Still need to know the oil pressure at idle   :)

thanks all,  Joel

When you crank the motor, a quart or more will flow into the filter. Pressure varies but I'd say you need to see at least 20 paid at idle or so

Thanks!  I'll check it in the spring.  Wont be turning it over since I got it all winterized, sprayed the carb with fogging oil till it stalled, fogged each cylinder & spark plug, changed the oil / filter, drained water out of all hoses / sea strainer & both block petcocks and 2 & 1/2 jugs of antifreeze in (just in case).  Cant think of anything else other than wait for SPRING - its not getting here fast enough  :(

I was re reading through this post and have a question. Is changing your oil before winterizing common practice?  The reason I ask is oil degrades over time as well, not just because of running it through an engine.

Wondering if and how that effects the motor if at all

The common practice is to change when winterizing, I have always differed from the crowd, I like to check the dipstick & "read" the oil in the fall when putting the boat to bed for the winter, smell for gasoline, milkyness etc. if present I address right away. If normal just dark in color I wait until spring, & allow any condensation that might form drip into the old oil, then BEFORE starting for the first time in the spring drain the old out completely & replace with new oil, filter, & trans oil...works for me.
