Title: Engine replacement
Post by: keehr22 on September 16, 2010, 10:27:29 AM
Last weekend of the season and somehow I managed to blow a head gasket, after getting the head off it looks like a full rebuild is in order. I'm good with the engine part, but wanted to ask what else i should replace while its out of the way? I do know my prop shaft is bent, can those be trued or do i need to find a replacement?

Let me guess between cylinders 6 & 4 ?  depending on the engine hours and overall condition you may be fine with just working on the bad side
try to leave as much of it together as possible........ unless you really want to tear the whole thing down
if the deck is still clean and level and only the head is missing material, just replace the head and gasket
I don't understand why either particularly if your motor is throttle body injected MPI I understand TBI doesn't
make a lot of sense, not so good fuel, not so good (anymore ) knock sensor.

you already know your shaft is bent(?) a good experienced machine shop will claim they can straighten it
I've never met with one that really could...... and I wouldn't bother with straightening a shaft for my boat

Good Luck
