Title: HEllo fellow AS owners
Post by: 56mulberry on January 12, 2010, 03:13:03 PM
Hey my name is Doug and I have a ski boat problem.....actually not a problem just a project--restoring a 1980 A.S in beautiful  tangerine/cream.

(RonT if your trolling this forum I'm the guy from Alabama that called you and emailed you back in Feb/Mar 09--you may or may not remember...)

Anyways--Hull is good, motor is tired but functional (hopefully for this year at least!)

Just happy to see a forum for these beautiful and extremely well-built boats---more later---thanks Doug

That being said-I have a rotten floor although all stringers are good--I redid all the upholstery--it was good but wood was rotten in all panels etc--I removed rotten wood and replaced with marine grade ply with a couple coats of resin on it--seat bottom, combing panels,  etc...

I was able to remove most of the floor (all interior is out) but cant get it out under the passenger "L" seat up front.

Has anybody removed floor completely w/out splitting deck from hull?

I am planning to cut the seat along the factory fiberglass seam to remove it, redo floor , then glass and gel the "L" seat back in and screw it  down to new floor. may reinforce with aluminum brackets and stainless screws since it wont show under cushions....D

if your going to go through this process you may consider adding addtional access to the under bow under seat area, I don't remember if your pass seat back is hinged. if not add a hinge

good luck

Doug, how many hours on your motor? What indicates that it's tired? Is it not getting to 4400RPM or burning oil? I'm curious as to how many hours people are getting out of these early 80's motors. I have an 82 and I have around 800 hours on it and it revs to 4500RPM and doesn't use any oil between oil changes. It runs good but not perfect.

Doug,
What part of Alabama? I'm on Logan Martin lake in the summer (Pell City) but currently live in Mobile.

Not sure of hours on motor (meter stopped at 530hr) --so dunno how motor will turn out--but I pulled it out of boat yesterday--good thing since the P.O.'s had cobbed half of it together---wrong hoses all over it, wrong sizes--etc... bunch of crazy wiring.  Going to re-enforce motor mounts by putting plate on back side of stringers.  Floor is out except for @3-4" around edge.  GOnna chisel out all of old flotation foam, redo some stringer wraps to make stronger and then re-install floor, new foam, new carpet, then after pulling valve covers, re-doing engine cosmetically put it back in adn recarpet....then I have to re-install passenger L-seat and fiberglass it back in where we cut it out along factory seam ...geez--I'm getting tired thinking @ it  !!!  Motor is sittin g in back of my truck still --will lift it out tomorrow and put in shop under house.

BTW I am on Lake MArtin at Alexander City in alabama to the gentleman that asked--will try to post some more tear-down pics soon.  thanks DOUG

My Uncle is on Lake Martin in Jacksons Gap. Next time I come home (Im from Bama myself) Ill bring the Skier and we will have to get together. My grandparents along with my uncle used to own lake hill marina on the north side of the 280 bridge.... until Russle land threw us out to build the monster they have there now.

Nice boat, cant wait to see your progress!

Uncle is Dan Howell, my grandparents were Helen and Carlos Howell....... My grandfather had no voice box and talked with a servox (thing he put up to his neck that made sort of made him sound like a robot)(usually how people remember him that didnt know him)

Dan lives on the other side of the lake now...... over by graveyard island if you know where that is.
