Title: Wooden boat ID?
Post by: Messer on February 19, 2014, 11:41:59 PM
Definitely not an AS, but does anyone recognize the make of this old girl? She is just up the road from me. Wondering if it would be worth a project...

My guess is that it was a kit boat, they were very common in the early 50's & this was a typical size back then.

No motor, "outside" your skill sets, sounds like my advice would be to walk away from it.

Ron is definitely the master here, but.... that looks like a pretty neat little toy/project.  Missing some components, but looks to have some of the others that you would need.  As far as out of you skill sets, you can't learn if you don't try!  I think if you could buy it in the $700 range and could source a reasonable priced used motor/trans it may be pretty neat.  All that being said, if you consider your time working on it costing money, and/or if it needs a bunch of wood repairs, and/or you think it will be worth more than you will put into it if you sold it... just walk away.

Another thought, you could learn on it, not being worried of ruining a true classic woody, and then maybe use your newly developed skill set to take on a true classic or build your own "kit" woody from plans (I personally have a set of plans from Glen-L for one, hopefully it will actually get built one day!)

Ron
On the subject of wooden boats, did you ever build a prototype of what you planned on marketing? Any pictures or drawings? I really like the look of the old wood inboards, probably why I just offered the "bad" advice of going for the above boat!

The "TanisCraft" mahogany ski boat is 95% finished in the cad which was done 2 years ago. This was a project that had its beginnings as a father-son effort when my oldest graduates from Naval Engineering school but life changes & he should be graduating in the spring with a business degree instead. The project is not dead, just taking a long nap. The cost to build the first one was north of 150K for a 21' boat.

It would be awesome to see some drawings (although I understand not wanting to show them at this time).  That's kinda why I bought those plans, for a family project sometime in the future.  Was the pricing of 150K just for the first one or did you think that was probably going to be the price range anyway (depending on options)?  Looking forward to seeing the project wake up from the "long nap"!

But everything looks so easy on those 30 minute TV shows!  ... you're right though/ I look and think, I can do that, until it's in my yard...

My spare time projects will outlive me I'm sure, let see there is a 1971 Hydrodyne Hull & Deck with the hull 50% re-done, replacement engine/drive taking  up room in the shop, a 1997 TBX hull & deck awaiting a lot of TLC, then there is the 24' Eagle V-Drive prototype patiently waiting for a few hundred hours of work. Of course all this waits behind my current spare time project occupying an entire stall in the shop, my 180MPH all composite super-toy.
I know all about collecting projects thinking they will magically resurrect themselves!
