Title: Exhaust flappers
Post by: coeperc on November 12, 2013, 02:48:14 PM
The old exhaust flappers on my '81 were dry rotten and needed to be replaced.  I bought new ones (they are the external type that fit over the ends of the exhaust pipes).  When installing them I noticed that the boat must have originally had internal flappers since I can see the remnants of the original ones along with a small bracket and two screws on the inside of the exhaust pipes about 1 1/2" into the pipes.  Is there really any big difference between using internal vs. external?  The boat had the external type for at least the last 12 years so I'm assuming not...

Either will work, the purpose is to prevent back wash from running back up the pipes into the engine. I am not aware of a source for replacement internal flaps, but many have fabricated their own from a piece of rubber.

I got the chrome tips on the back of my boat. Do you sell the internal flaps or is that something a guy would just make on his own? I had to put glenwood manifolds on my boat last year and they are a pain in the butt as far water running up the exhaust!

closed bow Volante / Barefoot Skiers (like mine) never had flappers they have these AWESOME stainless slash cut tips that are
about a foot long ....... the only issue I see a need for them is a fast launch into the water - so take it a little slow
and you should be fine -

With those new manifolds I've had water in the cylinders once it was actually being towed at the time (dang new motor builds)  :) none the less it made me nervous for sure I was just wondering if they made something that I could put in the exhaust tubing or behind the chrome tips?
