Title: ignition fuse keeps popping
Post by: 1997volante on May 20, 2013, 02:52:51 PM
i have a 1997 volante and the fuse for the ignition switch keeps blowing. Ive put a new ignition in with no luck. I also am getting a low voltage light but i checked the alternator and its fine. I have checked all connections and they look fine, i had my radio wired into the switch but i put that on its own line now with no luck. Any help/suggestions would be great.

This is basic electrical troubleshooting or elimination process. Depending on how quickly the fuse is blowing will give me the hint of how bad it is. Also is the correct size fuse in there? I will have to fire up my old computer to double check but I think it was a 15 amp. The Ign. circuit is purple and several things are energized through this circuit. If the fuse is blowing quickly it will be easier to troubleshoot. Either way I would start at the ign. switch, pull the purple off, turn the ign. on & nothing should happen, if the fuse blows you have bigger problems.

its actually a 20amp red wire that runs to the ignition switch from fuse box. it starts up and runs for about 20 sec then blows. My guess would be that its the main power for ignition switch

Correct, everything including the accessory post is running off this, take the Orange?? off the acc. terminal if there is one on there & retest.

Joel,

Low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps are pretty common failures on FI motors. It just may be a bit of a challenge figuring out which one is the problem.
I'm still old school and don't know my way around them yet.
