Post by: kjerchinger on March 19, 2012, 07:21:55 PM

( ok I was not done, was just starting a new paragraph, and I sent inadvertently. this is going to take some getting use to.
I have always had trouble starting my 85 advance when it is hot, very slow crank. so now that my starter died, I though it to be a good time to upgrade to a Magnetic type, I have read they have much more cranking power which is what I need when I try and start her  after just shuting her down. I have the new starter installed, figured out where to land all the wires exept the coil wire.
the magnetic starter has the celinoid attached but only has 2 large lugs and are spot to land the yellow and red ignition wire. The independent coil had two small lugs in addition to the two large ones, which is where the coil wire was landed.
can anyone help me out with this ?
      thanks, Keith

I broke down and had a mechcanic in town come out and take a look last night, thought I would post the results for the record.
He figured it out, and WOW, this starter cranks unbelievably ! well worth the trouble. First off, I found it odd that when I Googled how to convert to a Magnetic starter the Ignition wire was addressed but not the coil wire. This is because the coil wire would not usually be landed at the selinoid, even the elecrtic diagram in the manual shows it tied into the Positive Automatic Choke, ( ya thats right, I had the info in the manual the whole time ) not sure I could have figured that out even if I had looked at it.
I'm a carpenter by trade, which came in handy with my recent floor replacement, but not much good at electric issues.
Hope this info is helpfull to someone sometime, as I strongly recommend a Magnetic Starter.

Happy Boating to all, this weather we are having in Illinois is unbelievable, more days above 70 in March than in history, and a hi of 85 today !

1. it's not a "magnetic starter" what I think you mean is permanent magnet starter w/ gear reduction
2. you didn't buy it from me and doubtful it came from Ron - because if it did we would have explained in detail how to wire it
3. assuming you have a ford you should have had to only reland the wires from the original starter relay to the new starter solenoid (chevy no wiring change)
4. glad to hear you finally got figured out

thanks Dan for the correction,

mental block I guess, before I ever new you I have always gone to Slueter Auto Electric for starters, and your right, they are not as helpfull as you have always been. Now I now better.
I also just figured out what could have been the reason the boat cranked so slow in the first place, the timing was advanced about 20 degress, I may have not needed this Permenent Magnet Starter, though it was probably a worth while upgrade.

the new starter is certainly more robust than the old style starter
and I stopped using Slueter years ago, they are just not what they were 10-20 yrs ago
and yes 20 degrees is WAY to much
