Title: Re-doing wooden platform ?

Hey guys I want to make my platform look better mine looks kinda gray in color can I just use a regular stain on it then use a sealer.... like thompson porch sealer?

Any info on how to do it the rite way?

Hi,

No. Be sure to use Teak Oil. Do not use stain.  I sand ours down a bit ( I actually had to sand it a lot the first time because someone put stain on it) then give it a coat or two with teak oil.

There a couple different teak oils rite? What teak oil do use?

Sand it smooth.   Clean & scrub with 3/4 bleach & 1/4 water solution...  rinse thoroughly and let dry THOROUGHLY...  It should be VERY dry before coating with teak oil.   Go over with multiple light coats of teak oil and let dry.  It will be beautiful - no stain required - and absolutely dont use any sealant, laquer, etc...  makes it slippery as hell.

Its a bit of work, but the results are well worth it   :)

 I used a wire brush with bleach recently, that worked really well. It was easy to get n the grooves.

Scrub brush with a bleach/water solution to clean.  Let dry completely, then sand to smooth out and knock down rough spots.  Clean off, and teak oil multiple light coats.  I always would teak oil in the fall to allow the oil to soak in all the way over winter.  Don't oil and use immediatly, the oil will track and stain the interior!  Once you have it cleaned, you can usually only oil every winter (if the boat sits outside you will need to do more often) and not have clean and sand but every couple years (again, this experience is from a boat that was trailered everywhere and was kept in a garage every night, more use will require more maint)

1 quart will be sufficiant for multible coats

Don't know if it is right or wrong but I've been told to NOT sand with the grain on teak.  I also use a green scouring pad instead of sandpaper.  Last time I did it was with a mixture of linseed oil and transmission fluid.

Pretty sure it was Ron or Dan that told me that.
