Title: Prop/Shaft make a bad squelling noise when ingaged!
Post by: vrtaylor on July 22, 2010, 07:27:12 AM
My 2000 A/S, is making a loud squelling noise when ingaged forward/backward. Sounds like it is coming from the rear support. My question is can you grease that support and how? If it may be something else I would appreate any advise!

The rear support under the boat is called the strut...  Inside the strut is a brass tube with a rubber lining called a cutlass bearing.  It is water lubricated - no oil, etc...  If its squealing - stop using boat NOW or you'll likely cut grooves into your shaft.  You'll need to replace the cutlass bearing.

The through hull fitting from the engine compartment (through the hull) into the water is called the shaft log.  If its squealing - stop using boat NOW or you'll likely cut grooves into your shaft.  Your shaft log may be too tight - you may want to loosen it a bit, get a good drip of water coming in and then try the motor in forward/reverse.

Either way, it sounds as if your cutlass bearing &/or your shaft log may need replacement.  Ron or Dan Tanis (both on here) can help you with parts & procedure.

Look in boat maintenance or some of the other discussion folders on this site.  There's been a couple of threads covering "how to" do this in detail...  Also, Dan Tanis (on here) can get the right bearing sent to you quicker than a jack rabbit on a date  :)  Dont go to your local dealer and buy the cheap stuff or you'll be back doing this again in no time.

Ron & Dan Tanis used to design / build these boats - you'll find no better guys to help you out.  Both guys are on here - parts cost $$, expert advice, know how & LOTS of guidance are FREE  :)
