Title: Restore Pics (Posted on behalf of Mike aka gongchuan)
Post by: phil on June 14, 2010, 10:10:22 AM
"These are just "in the process" pictures. Its a 1986 Barefoot Skier. It was originally red or maroon, but I put blue with metallic flake on it. Also what you see is a polly floor in the boat.

More on the way, hopefully very soon."

I picked up a set of the swim platform (removable type) brackets from Ron a few weeks back and got them mounted along with the platform itself today!

For anyone who is thinking about doing this, Ill tell you what I did. It might save you some time and hassle. (Or possibly not). The holes on the part that bolts to the transom did not line up with existing holes in the boat. I was going to fill the holes in the boat and drill some new ones, but that just didnt seem right to me. The last thing I want to do is drill holes in my boat that were not there in the first place. (It really worried me because the holes were overlapping each other and I thought that wouldnt be very sturdy and I might break out the patch work.

So long story short, I had the bracket holes welded full, grinded them smooth, plotted and drilled new holes in the brackets themselves so they matched the boat.

I feel much better about doing it this way. Now that they are mounted and everything lines up, I am going to blast them and powdercoat them. (Lucky me I have a small coating buisness..... so......) It was a 1 afternoon job, and I dont have a worry in the world about the transom!  ;D

Here are a few shots. I powdercoated the windshield frame with a light matte finish and a picture with the carpet in before being cut. Its coming along, not fast enough, but its coming along.

Hey, thanks Phil. Feels pretty good, have done all the work myself so far (dad painted I assisted. ) was really worried about the carpet but it turned out pretty good if I say so myself.

Dunno, they are just jpg's embedded in the post. I tested it on Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera and it all appears correctly for me. You must have a security setting or browser setting that is blocking them. Do you use internet explorer 7 by chance?

Alright, pictures to come later cause Im working today, but the paint is done on the top of the boat. Just so everyone knows who may not already. The boat is a long-going project. I bought the boat off a man that purchased it from Sammy Duvall (he had a boat lot in Windimere FLA). It was not Sammy's but was on his boat lot as a trade in.

Fast forward, the guy who had it didnt take care of it. It needed floor, motor was locked, on and on and on.....

I got it, painted it, rebuilt engine, was going full bore on it until hurricane Charlie when a metal shed flew in from next door and damaged the top of the boat....... I was so mad I let it go and sit for another couple of years..... which is where we are now.

My dad fixed all the problems on the top and it is complete as of today. As soon as I get it married to the hull again....... one good weekend and she will be ready to break the motor in under a load!

Ill get some pics up later. Thanks for EVERYONE'S help! I cant wait for the "Get Together"

O.K.  I'll throw it out there before Phil does... PICTURES!!!!  PLEASE!!!!  Sounds like your well on your way to completion!   I saw the original condition pics and there is NO WAY I could have taken on that project.  I call Ron when I do almost anything  :(  A mechanic I'm not, but I love my boat as its readily apparent that you do as well.  Cant wait to see pics of it on the trailer and on the water!!!

One question:  What material are you using for the bow "Y" bumpers on the trailer nose???  Looks like its white...  Thanks man!  Keep it up  :)

My dad rocking out the pearl blue. Notice how he followed the factory lines on the dash! He is crazy, I told him it was all covered up but he wouldnt listen, so he fine line taped everything.  Thanks Dad!

And lastly for tonight, Joel.... that is a poly board material that is very very slippery when wet. It is just an idea of mine, I think its better than carpet. I also put it inside my fenders.
Title: Re: Restore Pics (Posted on behalf of Mike aka gongchuan)
Post by: Joel on September 06, 2010, 08:18:55 PM
HOW NICE IS THAT!!!!!!  BEAUTIFUL!!!!!  Cant wait to see it completed!!!  I painted my son's Pinewood Derby Car (boat) white with the blue stripe down the middle and down the stern...  so, I guess mine was first!  Nice job indeed  :)  Check it out in my pic folders...

Where can I find some of that poly board material???  The carpet is rubbing the hell out of my gel coat on the bow.  Sounds like a novel alternative that should work even better than carpet...  too cool!!!  :)
Title: Re: Restore Pics (Posted on behalf of Mike aka gongchuan)
Post by: Mike Harry on September 07, 2010, 02:59:06 AM
Basically its cutting board material. I had a buch of it because I used to be a butcher. I took all the old boards when the replaced them with new, so I did my whole floor in the stuff along with the stop on the front of the trailer and the fender boards.

Ill see if I have enough to send you some for the front. I did see that derby car, guess I have someone to thank for the idea on the stripe huh  ;D

Thanks!!!  My (his) Derby Car's paint job is classic car stripe - which is what the bow my boat reminds me of - a 1969 Mustang hood  :)

Send me a message if you have any laying around and I'll send you my contact info!

Again, beautiful job on the boat!  Thanks again!

Dash is coming together, and I got a huge box O new parts thanks to my buddies a Colabella Performance here in Saint Cloud that is going to keep me buisy for the next day or two! Im pumped if you cant tell  ;D

The wood is mohagony, it matches my steering wheel, my step plates, and my knob..... which Im still waiting to see if the new ones are going to be made yet. Sooner or later the swim platform is going to be mohagony also, so everything is uniform.

The speedos and the other gauges are different (of course) but I pulled the rings on the airguides and taped the other gauges and sprayed with a texture black. I think it is pulled off pretty nicely.

It will really shine once I oil it, or clear it.... not sure which yet.

The other two holes are for my depth finder and my new hour meter (Thats right, 0 hours boys and girls) which are coming today  ;) both white face, and Ive gotta spray those rings as well.

Cut dash today  :-\ wasnt really excited about doing it, but with my gauge setup it had to be done. Not that its anything anyone will ever know or see, I just hate to cut "factory" stuff up. Oh well.

So today so far, Dash complete and final fitted. Taken back apart for sealer/clear on the wood then back together she goes after clear cures.
Rear blower hole cover painted/reinstaled. New rear light installed. Rear lift hook "loop" installed. New stainless fuel tank filler neck installed (also filler hose). Fuel tank installed. Fuel line to pump ran and installed. Breather line for tank installed (with a loop). 1 new blower installed beside transmission with new line. (also for anyone looking at my other posts I went with the regular line instead of some rigged up thing, its only 6 easy to get to bolts to lean the tank forward to replace the hose). also 1 going under bow when I get in there to wire everything.

As SOON as the dash is back together and I get the steering in it, she is ready for a test run. Not complete, but ready for a test run........ oh yeah and as soon as I get my tag for it or my cop friend wants to ride with me.   ;)

Back of the boat complete. Putting on the 4th coat of sealer on the dash now! One more sanding and its time for the clear coat. Then rudder cable and all gauges go in. Ill be done except for rub rail and the seats.

Thank goodness

(pardon all the dirt and debris)
Title: Re: Restore Pics (Posted on behalf of Mike aka gongchuan)
Post by: Mike Harry on October 10, 2010, 05:38:17 AM
No real pictures of this process, but it is just a pretty under the dash as it is anywhere else on the boat in my opinion. This weekend I got everything wired in. Battery and ground cables (welding lead), all of the dash and gauges, all lights, 2 blowers, ect. ect.

Only problem I have had is with the oil pressure gauge. I think its becuase I have the wrong type sending unit (either normally open or closed) because the pressure shows off the charts when I turn the key on. Everything else appears to be working properly. All that is left is to run the alternator wire and wire up the choke (and fix the oil pressure) and Ill be in the water testin her out.

Could be as early as this evening!!!

OH yeah, steering is all hooked back up as well..... and all appears to be working properly there.

First time off the trailer today. She ran out just fine. Like a raped ape. I have not opened her all the way yet.

Throttle doesn't want to stay in one spot, wants to back off if I pull hand off handle. Anyone have any suggestions?

I also put the steering gear through the wrong hole so she steered backwards ;) but that's fixed now.

On your throttle question, I was always under the impression that that is the correct way it should work as you always want positive pressure on the throttle for skiing as the skier cuts and pulls the boat speed down you can compensate with more or less positive pressure to maintain the speed of the boat.  Also if something should happen to the driver, the boat goes back to an idle speed.

There should be a throttle return spring on the carb. but they do very little in a ski boat unless the cable breaks off near the carb. There is no return spring in the Morse MV control head, so my guess is that you have a pretty stiff return spring on the carb. With a well broken in throtte cable you may get a little "drift" toward neutral but I have never felt any return pressure at the handle from the oem spring.

Post by: Mike Harry on October 18, 2010, 02:06:20 PM
No springs either way, but I was thinking about putting one of equal strength on both sides to sort of hold it in place.

I may have put a little too much grease in the throttle handle when I reassembled it....?

No, My stock seat was tore up and it looked like swiss cheese in the bottom of it (I dont know why, Im guessing previous owner was trying to mount it other ways since the stock seat mount was nowhere to be found when I got it)

That one is cast plastic and I got a heck of a deal on it from Brandon. It is pretty comfy.

With Christmas coming soon, sadly I think Im just going to have to drive her as is for a little while. Hopefull santiclause will be good to me as far as that goes.

That seat is a B&M generic pontoon furniture from Overtons.  I was just going to make the observers seat by cutting and modifing their 36" bench and then order the extra fabric for the engine box. Way cheaper than custom upolstry, but no where near the quality of custom.

That's why you need to upload them into the Media image gallery on this site. That way you don't have to resize them. You only need to resize your photos if you actually post them in one of your threads. But either way works.

Right now I'm looking at being minus my graphics which really sucks because I thing the barefoot graphics are among the coolest. We (dad and I) are planning on painting them on and clearing over so that's for sure not happening until after. I will be without fresh seats all around. Going to try and get the L seat and backs done, everything else will be what it is now. Also thinking about painting the motor cover for now, as the cash just isn't flowing well enough to have it covered.  Other than those items and a fortune in gas ill at least be there for the first and really be looking forward to the second reunion when she will be in the high 90% finished range. I promise you though, she will snatch your butt up out of the water NOW!

For anyone keeping track of my progress, The rubrail is on!!!!! Check out pics in my photobucket (check bottom of this post for link) if they are not there yet, they will be soon as they are downloading now.

Let me know what you think. I love it, it wasnt a really hard job and it really makes her look more like a boat now I think.

Some will call me crazy, actually my dad is! We are smoothing the hand laid glass on the motor box cover to paint it. My idea taken to the next level bye my dad. I just wanted to smooth it a bit and dump some white on it until it gets covered,  but he has decided to smooth it completely and add the stripe.

I dunno about all that work, but if it turns out as good as the rest of the boat I may have to leave it that way for quite some time.

Some shots of the process on my photobucket.

I'm running a 600cfm marine 1409 Carb (edelbrock). Its what came on the boat when I got it. Long story short, runs fine at mid throttle and great wide open, but I have to adjust the idle every damn time I run her cause it NEVER idles right. Found vacume leak finally. Leaking around butterfly shaft. Non serviceable of course, so the BRAND NEW Carb will be here this afternoon.  Wish me luck!

What kind of carb is the new one?

Went back with edelbrock. Simpler, and all my adjustments and brackets are already set for it. I thought about the Holley, but to be honest I've never had good luck with them and the edelbrock is about half the cost of the Holley brand new.

Mike,

I can not WAIT to see your boat!!!  It might be next year, but I'm still looking forward to it - I'm sure it will be Da Bomb!!!

My Holley is a bit tempermental after the engine has been running / getting hot, but I cant complain - I just put her in neutral, give her a 1/2 pump of gas, and turn the key... fires right up and runs like a champ...  really hard to complain.  Who knows, I could have a vac leak as well, but I'm as mechanically inclined as a "monkey with a monkey wrench"...  In the wrong hands I can do some damage...  ;)

Thankfully, the Holley is very easy to adjust and seems to be very forgiving...  :)

Update, boat has now moved from awesome catagory to amazing. Being able to back off the throttle from WOT to idle and not have to worry about stalling, or worse, not wanting to restart is a huge weight lifted.

Now I wont be worried about running with the motor cover on, up till now I rarely have done that due to the carb issues (and other stuff) I have been dealing with.

Also, motor cover just got first coat of filler primer. May not sound like much, but its far past where I was to begin with. A few sandings, and Im sure some spot putty here and there and we will be ready to paint.......... install.

You guys have fun this coming weekend, but lookout, cause next year Ill be there!!!

For anyone interested in my "fake a lake setup" look at my newest photobucket pics. Works great and I can run the boat for unlimited time on trailer now.

Just incase someone needs it.

Both hoses are open end in the bucket. One is putting water in obviously (I start with drum full) and of course the other is suction and for me is much shorter.

Have not had much boat time lately,  but I did install a rear drain plug last weekend.  Pretty simple, but if your thinking about doing it be careful, its a lot higher on the transom from the outside than you might expect.

I think I may have the same rudder set up...  got the grease nipple on the side with rubber "O" rings inside...  Its getting a bit loose with some play in the rudder when I move it by hand under the boat.   Gonna grease it up and see if that helps.   If not, I'm not gonna like pulling out the rudder through hull, etc...    :'(

BTW,  your boat looks AWESOME!!!

Ordered decals for the boat, and the motor box cover after a long break is finally being finished. Its all white, just gotta lay out the stripes and get them on and clear it. At least its finaly finish smooth.

Pics to follow, but nothing really to show yet.

Didnt hear anything strange, didnt feel anything strange, 2 trips around the lake just above idle to warm her up a bit and then to half throttle....... engine grenaded.

Rod cap blew off, and didnt come off with the connecting rod bolt holes with it. Havent opened it up yet but the scope tells the story all to well. ( this is why dizzy came out of hole if anyone had seen that post ) have not got around to looking at it since then until now

Time for a short block, vortec style.

This may have just put a damper on the reunion situation as far as me making it is concerned.

Well boys and girls, I pulled the engine day before yesterday...... found the #8 rod cap partially missing. Funny though, the ARP studs and nuts were still locked into place. Ive talked with a few engine builder friends, they all said the same thing; Ive never seen a rod cap break that way before.

Damn the bad luck. The good news is it was not a mistake from the build which to some may not seem much but to me is very important. I have never built an engine that has come apart (at least not bye MY lack of attention). If one did come apart it was operator error (idiot drained oil and didnt replace it) or part failure (damn rod cap as described above).

Ill try to get a shot of the culprit to put up. Its the craziest thing Ive see come out of the bottom end of an engine.

Either that or it was not checked properly when the rods were supposedly gone over bye the machine shop. Bearings didnt fail, no sign of elevated temp or welding of the bearings to the rod or cap.

Oh well. The past is the past, and Im picking up 2 motors in the afternoon. 1 running Im going to throw the cam and heads on I have and run and a Vortec roller Im going to build in the mean time.

Dont think it was smooth to start with or anything. Dad spent hours smoothing it out. The outer part (part that is usually under the covering) was just hand laid glass and wanst flat or pretty at all.

The 350 stocker is running. Good pressure, sounds good....... a little valve adjustment today, some time on the motor to seat the rings and an oil change and Ill be ready for the break in period on the lake. Wish me luck.

Ron, just for you...... yes sir my old pulley must have been bent. After machine work on the new pulley for size my raw water pump hardly moves. It sits in tight quarters with only 1/16th of an inch to wobble but after bolting it down there is not wobble or play. Very pleased with those results.

Now only if the motor is that tight!

She is running out pretty well. Didnt want to put a huge strain on the fresh bottom end the first time on the lake so I only ran it up around 2500rpm max........ but it sounds good and pulls to 2500 with no issues although Im sure its not going to turn up as well as I would want it to. This is however the "get me by" motor until I put together the other Vortec block. Hopefully I will get the rest of this season and all of next season out of this one without any issues.

Just got this one in and its already time to start the other block prep  ;D

Well I'm a PORSCHE guy...  it hurts me working on all this stuff   :o   Although my 928's 5.0 liter engine is based on a 302 c.u...  it just happens to be made completely of aluminum and magnesium/alluminum alloys.  You DONT want to over torque ANYTHING...  Wrench, wrench, wrench... SNAP!... is not a sound you like to hear  :(

Seriously, when we start getting into the motor past the intake, timing belt, water pump and valve covers then I'm a fish out of water...  Fortunately, my Ford 351 hasnt given me two seconds of grief... EVER!!!   Knock on wood!!!!

Joel, good news sir....... the last part of your package will finally be in Friday of this week. I will get a gift wrapped box out to you most likely on Monday morning.

The boat is running out well. Got about 5 hours on the new motor with break in RPM's, now its time to seat the rings and run her full bore around the lake once or twice (wish me luck). I put the motor together with a moly lube that I am not all impressed with....... it was supposed to melt away into the oil and come out in the first oil change. Well, it clogged the damn filter and my pressure dropped off a bunch at about 2.5 hours. Changed the oil and pressure is 40 to 60 psi and 25 at idle so I am a happy camper again, but I guess its time to go back to the tried and true white lithium grease assembly lube Im used to using cause that moly shit aint never going back in a motor I build again.

For Monday Ill be putting the rear floor section and rear seat back in the boat and Im going to finally put the finished motor box cover in the old girl. Looks like the tune and adjustment period are about over (again). Plan on putting her through the paces on Labor Day!
