Title: 351 rotation...RH vs LH?
Post by: 56mulberry on June 08, 2010, 08:52:31 PM
I believe my 351 Commander is a LH rotation engine--assuming it is determined based on standing behind the boat looking at the "back" of the prop toward the bow----my motor has to turn CCW for me prop to work which would make it a "left hand" rotation?    IS this how we tell?  and if so were all 70-80's vintage AS's built with LH 351's?  just curious as most boats seem to be RH to me.....D

Lets see if I can confuse everyone....
Marine engines are viewed from the back or prop end
Auto engine are viewed from the front end

CCW or Left hand or counterclockwise viewed from the prop side is the same as CW or right hand or clockwise viewed as an auto installation unless of course we have front wheel drive which would be neither CCW or CW but SW for sideways but a v-drive boat may or may not have a reversing gear in the transmission and it could be either CCW or CW as viewed from the prop end or back of the engine which should be the front of the engine if were in a car since the engine is now in backwards.

-OR- All A/S boats except for the prototype in my back yard are Left Hand or CCW Marine engines (which also means they rotate the same as a normal chevy pickup engine.

Sooooooo... the answer is all A/S boats are LH  :)  Sometimes ya just gotta boil Ron's answers down to the basic facts...  :)  Ron you are THE MAN!!!!

All Amskiers are standard rotation, LH (marine, looking to the rear) RH (Automotive, looking to the front)

most boats are standard rotation, LH, that use traditionally manufactured automotive engines, 350, 351, 454, 460, etc, etc.

boats that do not have a 1:1 trans may have a gear reduction 1:1.23, 1:1.5 etc may have standard rotation engine LH with reverse rotation prop RH

direct drive CC boats have been traditionally "un-correct" using RH marine engines (reverse rotation)

is that better?

Still living near Chicago......... we know how to shorten it up a little bit...........:)
